Mississippi Saltwater Fishing - 6 Tips

Fishing activities are largely conducted in the summer season, even if the temperature is very high. The fish are seen in various places such as wrecks coastal beaches in front, sea-grass and deep ravines. Southeast Deer Island offers a variety of fish.

The saltwater fish popular in Mississippi is the speckled trout. Redfish, white trout, flounder, black drum, spadefish, Crevalle jack and ground mullet breeds of fish are found widely in the Mississippi River watershed. In June, we can find big trout females. Americans are crazy about fishing for trout. These trout weigh from 2-6 pounds. Fish weighing over seven pounds have also been found. A fish called cobia is in May or June. According to the research laboratory on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Cobian travel over 15 miles per day. A large cobia weighing 60 to 100 pounds. The ideal condition for the pursuit of a cobia is a sunny day with a southeast wind.

Petit Bois and Horn Island has many fish, especially redfish. Damage caused by Hurricane Katrina a few years ago did not affect the existence of aquatic life. Redfish are in August on the barrier islands. saltwater fishing in Mississippi is a source of livelihood for many people in the United States of America.

Mississippi Saltwater Fishing Rules
There are many rules and regulations must be followed before the actual saltwater fishing. It is mandatory to hold a fishing license to fish in the sea in all saltwaters Mississippi, south of U.S. highways 90. The most interesting fact is that July 04 is day off each year saltwater fishing. Any person who has a valid license is authorized to fish in marine waters on this day. The purchase of a boat license is also required.

Saltwater fishing includes addressing all the elements needed for fishing. A fishing equipment is an equipment used for fishing. Its size should match the size of the fish. A terminal is to deal with a tackle attached to the end of his fishing line. This is a plug, the weight of the hook, swivel and leader. The weights correspond taking into account the size of the fish. Terminal is used for offshore or deep bottom fishing offshore. A draft is the main terminal tackle. Knobs are designed to prevent line twist. The swivel allows the terminal tackle to spin and avoid line twist. There are different types of bearings. A twist of the barrel is the cheapest available swivel. But the problem is that its design puts pressure on the ball as it affects his ability to turn. A rotation of the crane is more expensive than a barrel swivel. Freely rotating under heavy pressure. Swiveling ball-bearing twist are strong and offer qualities. Have incorporated internal ball bearings turn freely leader. complement being unbuttoned tour when a fish is caught. Connect the leader line. Rods, bait, tackle and rods are some other junk. These deals are available in all sizes, designs, weights and prices. Salt water is rough water. So the bar should be strong. addresses the crappie fishing is very efficient. The tackles should be kept clean. Wash face with soap to prevent corrosion.

Tips for saltwater fishing
First, the fishermen must have good observational skills. Decide on the type of fish you want. Redfish are in the Gulf of Mexico. It is not necessary to guide the deep waters as these fish enjoy the shallow waters. If you are targeting striped bass, you should go to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.

 QUESTION:
What is a good way to organize terminal tackle without a tackle box?
I only have 1 tackle box that I use to take to fishing ,so it is light and compact. However, the rest of everything else I have in a box.I am looking for a way to organize it and to effectively maintain my inventory. What I mean is to know the exact number of weights, hooks, lures, flies, and etc

 ANSWER:
A few plano boxes will work. If you want to go cheaper, zip-loc bags, disposable tupperware, old coffee cans, baby food jars, etc...

 QUESTION:
How important do you think it is to wash your hands before you tie your terminal tackle?
I've even heard people specify using Ivory soap. I guess because it's all natural ingredients. I'm thinking of fish like Northern Pikeminnow (Squawfish). They are usually described as visual predators. Would they react to smells like tobacco? Fisherman I know downplay the use of scents but they use them never-the-less, saying it's just to remove the plastic smell of tube bait.

 ANSWER:
The plastic lures carry more scent than your hands. Smoke a cigar if its buggy out, while fishing. Never hurt me while fishing, caught plenty of fish while smoking a cigar to keep the bugs away. If washing your hands and sucking on candy to tie tackle helps you sleep at night by all means do it. I`ve tied tackle and used my spit to tighten the knots and then fish them right away and have caught fish, while drinking coffee. Its just superstition.

 QUESTION:
Do you save lures, reels, rods, and other terminal tackle that are or are going to stop being in production?

 ANSWER:
Yep. When I found out that the original Castaic Wooden Trout was not going to be made anymore, I bought 150 of them just to hoard as many as I could and keep them for myself.Just kidding... I never got any of them. When they were on sale for , both me AND my dad thought they were too much money. Boy were we wrong.

I have several packs of old Terminator, Hooker, and California worms that are no longer available. They're all older than I am, and I'm 26 years old. A few packs of California Worms that I've consolidated into one big pack in particular is still catching fish, so I really can't say that I'm "saving" them. Why would I? They still work!

 QUESTION:
what else should i get for my tackle box?
i have pretty much everything in my tackle box. but im looking for stuff that is cool to have but is uncommon in a tackle box. I have a bunch of lures, is there any suggested lures? and is there any terminal tackle that is cool to have? also im running out of room in my tackle box so is there any large tackle boxes you would suggest?

 ANSWER:
What does "cool to have" mean? Cool to you are the fish? If it's only "cool" to you - it's a waste of $$$.

Terminal tackle? I always have a good supply of worm hooks in a variety of sizes for use with plastic worms & bullet weights in various weights.

Bass Pro Shops have a wide variety of tackle boxes. Just how big do you want to go? I did away with that huge tackle box theory years ago & switched to specializing several smaller boxes or binder bags. I only take along what I think will work on that particular day. In other words...if it's a bright sunny day & I think the fish will be holding tight to cover - I only take worms & jigs.

Sea Fishing in the Oban Area

Buy Esca Lures online at - http://www.escalure.co.uk/

Shore vs Boat

Most species in the area can be caught from both shore and boat. There are some excellent shore marks such as Dunollie Point on the Ganavan Road just past Oban. The most common fish caught from the shore are mackerel, pollack, spurdog, thornback ray, dogfish, cod, coalfish and a variety of flatties. All will be hooked on rag and lugworm as well as mackerel strips, mussel and peeler crab. However, boat fishing offers a much bigger catch and species seldom caught from the shore. Wreck and reef fishing is most popular and large catches are common. Charter boats operate out of Oban, Craobh Marina and Balvicar and are well-equipped with skippers providing tackle and a wealth of knowledge of local marks.

Specimen Skate

The British record skate (227lbs) was caught near Tobermory on the Isle of Mull and the area often yields fish well over the 200lb mark which attracts anglers from all over the UK. Skate can be caught all year round although the best chances of catching larger ones is between August to October. As with all big game fishing, the right tackle is essential. Ideally, this is a 50lb class rod with a heavy reel loaded with 50lb line attached to a harness and butt rest. The rig should be a simple one with a sliding boom with swivel link with a size 10 bronzed hook. There is no need for a wire trace as skate don't have large, sharp teeth. However, commercial grade monofilament around 200lbs is recommended. The best bait is a whole coalfish, mackerel or pollack of 1-2lbs with one fillet cut off which produces more blood and scent to attract the fish. Most skate caught in the UK are tagged and returned and anglers are encouraged to do this to preserve numbers of this rare, hard-fighting fish.

Loch Etive

Loch Etive stretches 20 miles inland from its mouth near Connel and the famous tidal Falls of Lora. It is one of the most unique lochs in the UK as it has two sets of narrows that affect the tide in such a way that there can be a two hour difference between high tide at the mouth of the loch and Bonawe only 5 miles away. The salt content is affected by this strange effect which results in a very diverse range of fish. For example, brown trout share the same marks as pollack and spurdog (the loch yielded the Scottish shore record of 15lb 3oz). Good marks are Ardchattan Priory and Bonawe Quarry further up the loch on the north shore, and the windsock near Connel Bridge. Boats hire is available from Taynuilt pier. Spinning here will usually catch pollack, saithe and trout in warmer months whilst bait fishing will produce some large spurdog, dogfish and thornback rays.

For diverse and unique fishing, the waters in the Oban area are ideal for casual and experienced anglers alike.

Saltwater Fishing Techniques For Mid-Atlantic Artificial Reefs

Fishermen of the Mid-Atlantic from New England to North Carolina often fish around structure, including shipwrecks, rocks, rubble, bridge pilings and artificial reefs.

Depending the location and season, these fishing hotspots can hold a variety of fish including cod, haddock, scup (porgy), black sea bass, tautog (blackfish), summer flounder (fluke), striped bass, weakfish, croaker, spot, sheepshead, spadefish, cobia, king mackerel, monkfish and other species.

The following list of tips apply to wreck, reef and structure fishing:

* Use a basic top and bottom fishing rig when snags and hang ups are not a problem.

* Switch to a single hook rig in areas of extremely rough bottom.

* Carry a wide selection of sinkers ranging from 3-8 oz.

* When targeting large fish only, use large jigs or single baits such as whole split squid mantles or fish fillets.

* Use a rod and reel that can handle depths from 15-120 feet, and 3-8 oz. sinkers.

* Fish with braided lines for added sensitivity.

* Use baits such as squid, croaker, bluefish, herring, sand eels, blue crabs, green crabs, mole crabs, fiddler crabs, shrimp and clams.

* When using cut crab, leave the legs on and check baits often. Replace baits that have had the meat sucked out of the shell.

Buy Esca Lures online at - http://www.escalure.co.uk/

* Avoid excessive tension on the line and pay attention for minute signs of nibbling. Give a short tug upward when movement is felt. If the fish appears to be in the line, set the hook, lift the fish away from structure and then reel in gently.

* When fish are suspended over structure, try fishing metal jigs or other lures at varying depths.

* Tag and release undersized fish. Switch techniques or locations to avoid excess bycatch of smaller species.

* Take no more fish than needed.

* Identify fish sexes - Release female fish when possible.

* Support Artificial Reef programs.

A Sherkston Shores Vacation - Part 2

In part one of this series on Sherston Shores and the surrounding area I focused on the swimming and some of the other family activities you can enjoy there. In this part I'm going to tell you about my favorite part of a vacation at Sherkston Shores: the smallmouth bass fishing. As I mentioned before, Lake Erie is very clean in southern Ontario. If you're fishing on a boat, it's very easy to see the bottom of the lake when you're in 20 feet of water. Not only is the water clean but the number of bass that live there is amazing. Most of the fishermen anchor or drift over between 10 and 20 feet of water and fish for the smallmouth with diving crank baits. Since I don't bring my boat up, unless I can hitch a ride, I have to find another way to hook these great fish. That's what I want to tell you about today.

About a mile from shore there is a wreck of an old barge. During World War II when the value of steel skyrocketed, the authorities decided to salvage as much of the wreck as possible. They constructed a coffer dam to dry the lake bed from the beach to the wreck. Then they built a road out to the barge and were able to truck a huge amount of steel back to shore. When they removed the dam and flooded the road, they left behind a fisherman's paradise.

Most of the time, the old road is covered by one to four feet of water for the first half mile or so toward the remains of the barge. From the edge of the road, the water immediately drops off to a depth of five to eight feet. This is where the fish patrol looking for food. I've found that top water baits with no weight work fantastically for an hour after dawn and the last hour before dark. During the middle of the day I like to use a shallow diving or suspending crank bait. I've yet to find a time of day that you can't catch these bass. As a matter of fact, I'm not kidding when I say that I've caught over 100 fish in a day several times. Most of the smallmouth I've caught off the road are between 10 and 15 inches in length and the biggest one I caught was 21 inches long.

The smallmouth bass season in Lake Erie runs from the fourth Saturday in June through the end of November. You have several choices when it comes to fishing licenses. If you're going to be fishing in Lake Erie for a week or less, you can buy an eight day sport fishing or conservation license. The sport fishing license allows you to keep up to six smallmouth bass a day and the conservation license allows you to keep up to two fish per day. If you're going to be at Sherkston for longer than a week, you can buy a seasonal sport fishing or conservation license. The limits are the same but the license is valid for the year. Since I'm a catch and release fisherman, I save some money by purchasing a conservation license.

Well, if great swimming, family activities and fishing aren't enough reasons to visit Sherkston Shores, there are more. In part 3 of this series, I'll start to tell you about some of the fun things to do within a 45 minute drive of the resort. Stay tuned.

 QUESTION:
Medterrain sea shore fishing?
well in the medditarrian sea there is a beach on the shore and this old local man was catching tons and tons of fish, i was fishing with lures like i do in america. He said he used bread, so i used bread but it doesn't stay on the hook any tips?
thx
it is in a marnia, so there is no waves

 ANSWER:
I see your problem, firstly use a small hook, barbless works well, then before you use the bread soak in a little water, make it into balls in your hands then apply around the hook shank, don't use too much or it will fall off, you can also use the crust of the bread that has not been soaked in water. You can also soak it in some fish oils to give it more scent and make it stick together better. The saltwater fish were most likely saltwater mullet, they live in most marinas and they love bread for bait. If the bread still keeps falling off take one of the old plastic camera film canisters, drill it with holes in the sides and one in the lid and the bottom , fill it with bread dough, then thread it onto you line like you would a float or a bobber, then attach your hook below with a little bread, this will attract fish.

 QUESTION:
Sea fishing; please help a beginner?
Hello! I tried beach casting with an old friend yesterday, and now I'm hooked (no pun intended!). He's been doing it for years, and although it was a choppy day he got a good hour's worth of basic tuition across to me before the weather forced us to the cover of a local pub.

He did touch upon something that interested me, but as I won't see him for another week, I was wondering if anyone on this site might be able to help. We were fishing with ragworm, but my query concerns weighted lures (plugs?).

Am I right in thinking that these weighted plugs have hooks attached, and so there is no need for live bait? Is shock-leader needed when rigging a weighted lure, or does it just slip straight on to the end of the mainline- if so, this seems like a very simple way to fish...no float, no lead, no swivels, no 'bait', just a weighted lure on the end of the mainline....is this right? Is exactly the same true of spinners?

I probably got the wrong end of the stick!

Thanks!

 ANSWER:
Plugs are not generally weighted,at the front of them there is what looks like a spoon, this is called a diving vane, as you wind the water hitting this vane makes the plug dive and the shape of the plug causes it to wiggle like a swimming fish,by twitching the rod tip you can impart more action to make it seem as though the fish is injured and easy prey. There are also plugs with concave faces , these are poppers and are fished on the surface ( in calm conditions very effective ) and by twitching the rod tip you make them pop and splash on the surface. Spinners are of a metal construction and are cast out and retrieved bellow the surface at varying speeds , when cast out you can count until you feel the spinner hit bottom then count less each time you cast before retrieving so you cover all different depths.
Hope that's been of some help

Why Choose Shimano Fishing Reels?

Shimano Fishing Reels are products of the Shimano Fishing Tackle Company. The company began business in 1921 under the name of Shimano Ironworks and their product was a bicycle freewheel. Through the years up until 1970 their main focus was on bicycle production. In 1970 the fishing tackle division was introduced and by 1978 the company starts a fishing tackle campaign. This was the year that the series of Bantam reels were released. In 1981 the X Line series of rods were released. You can find many subsidiaries of the Shimano company through out the world currently with products ranging from fishing equipment to bicycling equipment to golfing equipment.

The Shimano Fishing Tackle company products range from rods. reels, gear and anything in between. With the focus being on the reels, Shimano has a great selection to choose from. Conventional reels, Low Profile Bait casting reels, Round Bait casting reels, Offshore Spinning reels and Spinning reels are some of the reels available through Shimano.

Conventional reels include reels for the saltwater angler such as the Trinidad DC. This reel is an exceptional choice for saltwater anglers due to it's digital braking system. With an 8 step adjustment knob you can control the mode of the reel from an ultra long cast mode to a maximum control mode.

The Tekota reel is a conventional reel that is great for both freshwater fish and saltwater fish. Saltwater anglers will appreciate its strength and durability while the freshwater angler will appreciate its line capacity.

Spinning reels that Shimano offers include the Spirex FG. This reel was designed for simple one handed casts and has A-RB bearings which produces a smooth retrieval of the line. The Sahara would be the choice for light saltwater fishing or freshwater fishing. The line capacity and many features this reel has to offer makes it the reel for offshore fishing. The Stella FD has a magnesium frame and an aluminum rotor which makes this reel light weight and durable. It also has a gear coating on top of the normal gear coating that will ensure the durability of this spinning reel.

Being in the business for more than 80 years, the Shimano Company has produced high quality products though out the world. Their products have been improved upon and perfected to the company's highest standard and to the standards of many anglers. Professionals and novices alike will appreciate the quality of these reels and the results that are achieved.

A woman goes into a store to buy a fishing rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get, so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. The salesman is standing there, wearing dark glasses. She says, Excuse me. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?' He says, 'Madam, I'm completely blind; but, if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes.' She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, 'That's a two metre Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 5-kg test line. It's a good all around combination, and it's on sale this Week for £44.' She says, 'It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!' As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. 'Oh, That sounds like a Visa card, says the salesman. As the lady bends down to pick up the card, she accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed but then realizes there is no way the blind salesman could tell it was she who had farted. The salesman rings up the sale and says, 'That'll be £58.50 please.' The woman is totally confused by this and asks, 'Didn't You tell me it was on sale for £44? How did you get to £58.50?' 'The Duck Caller is £11 and the Fish Bait is £3.50.'

You can land a decent shark on a 5'6" rod, length has nothing to do with power. The reason rods are longer, are to give you longer casts. I believe the 10' rod will do fine. Buy the best rod you can afford. Lamiglas makes some very nice surf rods.

Five Pickerel Fishing Lures And When To Use Them

The pickerel is a species that can be found throughout the freshwaters of the Northern parts of the United States and in Canada. The pickerel is also known as the Northern pike and many people refer to them as just pike. They are a large predatory fish that can weigh up to about ten pounds and they can be very aggressive. This species can be fished all year long and this is one of the reasons why they are so popular.

The pickerel will eat just about anything that gets in their way and they often steal the bait that anglers use when seeking out other species. These two facts is responsible for making many people believe that catching this species is easy but, in reality they're not. They may not be a picky fish when it comes to eating but when you're seeking them out you need to use a bait that will get their attention. Just like with most species, some baits works better than others. If you don't use the right ones, you could spend hours on the water with no bites at all.

The pickerel is highly attracted to live bait and it's sure to get you some bites but there will be times when using live baits is not practical. In these cases, artificial lures can be used and there are even times when using lures would be more productive than live bait. However, you do need to choose something that will get their attention and you need to know when to use them.

Five pickerel fishing lures that work great:

1. Crankbaits - The best time to use crankbaits would be when fishing in cold weather and when fishing in deep waters.
2. Spinners - When using spinners choose the larger ones and they work great in most all conditions.
3. Daredevils - These are a type of spoon and the "red and silver" ones work great in clear water. The "yellow" ones called the "Five-of-Diamonds" work best in muddy waters.
4. Flies - Fly fishing is the most productive when the waters are calm so this would be the best time to use flies.
5. Topwater Lures - These are an excellent choice when fishing in shallow waters because they get the attention of the fish and draw them in your direction.

Out of these five baits there are many different sizes, colors and styles to choose from so there is something to use in every situation. By stocking your tackle box with a variety of the five lures listed above, you should be able to find something that will attract this fish in all situations.

 QUESTION:
I seen a fishing lure for sale on TV called Mighty Bite, Anyone out there tried it It looks like really good?

 ANSWER:
I'm sure that it will catch fish, but there is nothing particularly unusual or exciting there. The thing too with these kits is that you'll find that it contains some stuff that you'll use and other bits that you will never touch. The scent sticks are a total gimmick. Why buy all those bits you won't want?

My advice is just to buy a bunch of cheap jelly shads and plugs. When you find the ones that work best for you, buy some more and build up your own tackle box rather than have someone else do it for you.

I bought these fishing spoons at a garage sale today and I wanted to get some more information on them but I can't find anything on the internet so maybe someone else has heard of them. They have KAR stamped on them and the design is a spoon shape. Does anyone know what KAR stands for?

 QUESTION:
What to charge for bass fishing lures?
I used to be into bass fishing big time. I eventually grew tired of it and sold my boat. I still have a lot - like several hundred crank baits and spinner baits and thousands of soft plastic worms, lizards, etc. A large majority are brand new and some are still in original packaging. My wife and her family are planning a garage sale and I thought I might try to sell them, but I'm unsure as to what to price them at. I was thinking maybe 50 cents for the crank baits and spinner baits, and 25 cents for the bags of soft plastics. Would that be reasonable? Some of these lures cost 4 to 5 dollars new. I want to price them low enough to sell, but I don't want to give them away either. Any bass fishermen out there with any ideas? Thanks.

 ANSWER:
I work at a sporting goods store. Every summer we have a sidewalk sale. Lures that we cannot sell we put for sale at substantial discounts. Discontinued lures also. These lures are still in their packages.
We sell them for .00 to $.50 a piece. We move the .00 and $.50 lures first, and FAST!!! The .50 and .00 lures go last and on the last day, we lower those prices to try to get rid of our inventory.
We sell a bag of soft plastics for no more than .00 a bag, I don't think you'll get much out of your soft plastics.
The larger lures (3 1/2 inch lures +) you may get .00 out of, but all the smaller ones you probably won't get what you would like.
The name of a lure will definitely help you get more, but in the end, everyone is looking for a bargain.
Good luck.

 QUESTION:
How can I effectively clean dirty fishing lures without ruining their finish?
You know those used crankbaits, buzzbaits, spoons and spinners that you can pick up from garage sales and Ebay that haven't necessarily been as well taken care of as your own lures? The ones that have been left to the elements, like in a dirty tacklebox in hot weather(which melts unpackaged soft plastic baits to the lures in question), old fish attractants whose bottles have busted open, general grime and in some cases rust that has been rubbed off of old attached hooks onto the lures. So what to do? Any home remedies? Common household chemicals or cheaply acquired solutions that can clean these otherwise perfect lures without harming their paint and chrome finishes? Thanks for your time.

 ANSWER:
Lemon Joy dish soap and a toothbrush work well. For the really dirty stuff soak the lures in a bucket of super hot water and the soap over night first.

Fishing Accessories Available From Great Online Stores

There are many people in the world today who just love the thought of going off in a canoe and communing with nature the best way they know how. Some of these people will also be interested in angling too so they will certainly have to put together some kind of kayak fishing kit to help them catch their supper. Kayak fishing accessories come in many different forms so surfing around the net is on the cards for people to do some comparison shopping.

There are all kinds of gear available for the avid oarsman and these items range from paddles and leashes right up to safety jackets and poles with state of the art winding gear to make life that just bit easier for the angler. Indeed, gone are the days when poles were made of wood. These days, people are far more likely to have something light and springy made from carbon fiber to allow for a great whip action when the lure is to be placed wherever the angler wants it to go. Also, it is important that anything that the angler takes with him is light enough not to hinder his movements in the canoe. Leashes are available to tie the pole onto cleats on the canoe too so that if any accidents occur, nothing will be lost. There is nothing more frustrating than seeing a pole going off down the river when we may have paid a sizeable amount of money for it.

To this end, there are also stenciling kits available so that the oarsman can stamp his name or telephone number on all his equipment in case of loss. Most people who go out on the water are pretty honest folk so it is likely that the angler will get anything back that is found downstream.

On the internet there are many sites which sell all kinds of paraphernalia connected to angling and canoeing. Comparison shopping is a must and it is also quality comparisons which have to be done too. Although something may look better priced on one site than another, the quality may just be different so be aware of this before parting with any cash. Indeed, see if they have a returns policy before buying so that anything which does not suit can go straight back for a refund. If they do not have a returns policy, or one that looks a little suspicious, it may be reason enough to look elsewhere.

For those who are interested in starting up in this sport, bundles of goodies are often the most economical way to start getting the basic kit together. These are often discounted to encourage people to buy so if money is important then go for this idea.

Lastly, for the absolute novice, there are many ‘how to’ books on the market today and it may well be great winter reading before the sport is taken up. As long as all the basic safety tips are adhered to, this should be a very pleasant hobby for many years to come.

Manual Power Pole Vs. The Bomb

Who ever first thought of the idea of a manual power pole had to have been a fisherman. But who knows? Maybe he was an air-boat guy somewhere in the Everglades. Both would benefit from using this pole-type anchor and, in fact, many do. Manual power pole or an automatic version, this becomes a 'must-have' for any boater/fisherman who's seen it work.

A manual power pole is a shallow water anchor. It's purpose is to stop your boat exactly where you want it to stop, when you want it to stop, and then hold you in place against the current and the wind (up to 30 mph). It works in up to 8' of water. It allows you to do your thing in the boat, with the secure feeling of being tethered to the bottom.

There are various sites online that offer some version of the simple concept of driving a stake into the lake bottom and connecting your boat to it. There are automatic models around ,600 and there are manual models are , and the quality seems to run from something like a Yugo (no offense meant) to a Caddy. Whichever most appeals to you is great... You won't regret having learned about this awesome add-on to a boat.

A pricey automatic model comes from a company by the same name -- Power-Pole. Their slogan... Swift and Secure... is a description of what they provide. That is to say a swift way to make your boat secure out there on the water. This is the one you'll see on the back of the boats of the welll financed professional anglers you see on TV.

It's easier to catch the fish when you have a way to stop your boat and secure it right where you see them swimming. In depths of up to 8' you can firmly attach to the land beneath the water. It doesn't matter if it's sand, mud, rocks, shells or vegetation. A manual power pole is quick (less than 5 sec), silent (won't scare the fish away).

Having the ability to stop without resorting to the use of a clumsy boat anchor or a noisy trolling motor is a great advantage out there on the water. It doesn't matter what's on the bottom... Mud, sand, rocks, gravel... The power pole will hold you securely against the currents and the wind. The feeling of knowing you're securely tethered will not only ease your mind, but you'll actually be able to catch more fish too.

Check out this great invention. It works on other than just fishing boats, too, saltwater or fresh.

The two times that a leader is most important is when you want to go a bit more "stealthier" so you don't spook fish AND when your fishing heavy structure and the possibility of getting hung on the bottom is common.

 ANSWER:
Power Pro is the best, Ask most of the tournament bass fishers and they will say they use Power Pro.
QUESTION:
What is an all around good fishing line?
I only have two fishing poles and I need an all around good fishing line. I fish with lipless crankbaits, crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, spinners, rubber worm, topwater, and swimbaits. I fish for large and small mouth bass, trout, perch, and crappie. What is an all around good fishing line, I was thinking Power Pro but then I would have to worry about leader and cutting up the Power Pro. Advice please and is a leader that much trouble? Thanks

 ANSWER:
Power Pro is great line, but you're looking a extra unnecessary trouble. Go with fluorocarbon. I would recommend Seaguar. For cast-ability you should be thinking probably about the InvizX. Its gonna have the best casting for a smaller line say 12lb test. But for durability and cheapness go with their Red Label line. I personally really really like the 15lb test. This way you scrap the leader, and the trouble. To many things can go wrong with using a leader, and I don't like to take unnecessary chances. But I strictly tournament fish for Largemouth and Smallmouth bass. For flipping I use Power Pro hands down. Only! Everything else is seaguar. Not to mention, seaguar is invisible to the the fish. Power Pro is gonna stick out like a sore thumb. Fish are smart, so don't think they don't see it.

Bass Fishing: Picking The Best Lure For Your Location

Fishing for Bass is probably the most popular fishing sport in the United States. Across the US, the most popular Bass fishing events usually happen in the summer months.

Pros and amateurs alike will flock to tournaments stretching from Rhode Island all the way to Texas. It's very important that these anglers know how the Bass will behave, and what kinds of lures will work best to catch them.

Seasoned anglers usually have a pretty good idea of where the big Bass are just by testing the water temperature and analyzing the surrounding environment.

The angler will then determine what kind of food is available in the water, and make their selection of lure based on these factors. A most effective technique is to pick a lure that mimics food that is not available at that location. This often peaks the curiosity of the Bass, and "lures" them to snatch up your bait!

There are 3 popular lure types that are generally chosen by anglers in these conditions. They are:

1. Crank Baits

Crank baits are good lures to use when Bass are feeding in the mid to surface level. These baits are usually shaped like minnows, and all have a plastic lip that varies in size. This lip determines how deep or shallow the lure will run depending on the speed of retrieval. They are usually bright colored with spotted or striped designs.

2. Swim Baits

These baits resemble the swimming action of a minnow. They have streamlined designs and are shaped like smaller baitfish. The shape of these baits allows for exact imitation of the movement of a live minnow. They are usually equipped with a series of treble hooks suspended from the underbelly of the lure.

3. Jerk Baits

Jerk baits also shaped like minnows but usually weigh more than swim baits. The design of the jerk bait causes it to dive down and then quickly return to the surface using very irregular movemements. This tricks the Bass into thinking that the bait is a distressed minnow, the natural prey of Bass. There's nothing more attractive to a hungry Largemouth than an injured minnow.

Although there are many different types of artifial lures, some anglers still prefer the use of live baits such as grubs and nightcrawlers. As you hone your Bass fishing techniques you may even learn to make your own lures and you'll know which lure is best for the type of bass you are trying to catch and it's surrounding habitat.

overall, year round, it's the plastic worm, most often rigged texas style but there are lots of ways to use plastic worms and other soft plastics. probably more bass caught on them than all the other lures combined. for some reason, they don't develop a "memory" of these things the way they do for hard baits. you can release one and turn around and catch it again 5 min. later.

 QUESTION:
Is Gary Y.'s swim senko in green pumpkin the best fishing lure for bass ever?
I thought the 5" senko in green pumpkin was the best sinking bass worm type lure, BUT then they came out with the swimming senko and now it is the best top water "baby snake" lure ever for Florida. Do you know a better all round lure?

 ANSWER:
Not the best ever, but one of the most expensive. The term "better" can't really be applied because a lure that catches fish like crazy one trip may not produce on another trip. I always let the fish decide what is the better lure for that particular day and fishing conditions. But there are times when it seems that one particular lure will catch fish at a faster rate then most other lures will, but I have found it may do that for one, two or three years and then will just quit producing all of a sudden.

The " best ever" lure for about 3 years in my area was the Stanley Ribbit Frog. Now you are lucky if you can even get a strike on it. Bass just seems like you can never fully understand them. That's what makes it so much fun and challenging.

 QUESTION:
what type of bass fishing lure do you like the best and which one works the best?
i want to buy bass lures becausse i dont want to keep spending my money on bait everytime i go fishing. what bass lures work the best? ive use spinner bait and plastic worm but i dont seem to catch anything. what type of lures work the best for bass or pike? and if you have a picture of the lure then that would be great cuz i want to see what im trying to buy at the store.

 ANSWER:
Topwater lures have some good results. Diving crank plugs also work well. Topwater lures and rubber baits work best in shallow water in morning and evening, while divers and spinners work best in afternoon. So, you may have the right stuff, but bad presentation and time of use can prevent you from getting results. Also, old rubber worms smell artificial and unappealing, so make sure your rubber baits have scent on them. So my favorite is whatever works that day, but I really like topwater lures and rubber baits, so my best fishing is in the morning.

Sorry, no pics, but anyone in the store should know what you are talking about. I would recommend actually shopping in a sporting goods store, because their employees should know what they are talking about (Beware, they have proven this theory incorrect before).

What is the best lure for bass fishing?
I have a spinning reel and am using light wieght line (8lb). I have used mainly mid sized beatle spins and had luck and used a worm today but had no luck i was wondering what lure would be best for pond fishing in the south? Thanks,

 ANSWER:
Here's my take on the matter. The best lure is what the bass are hitting on in that particular body on water on that particular day at that particular time.Sometimes it will vary from day to day.For instance a friend fished a bayou with a buzz bait and slaughtered them two days ago. On that same day I was deeper water points in the main lake and slaughtered them on crank baits. Each of us had on the best bait for our particular fishing conditions.

 QUESTION:
what is the best bass fishing lure for fishing in the rain in a pond?

 ANSWER:
OH I wish I knew!
One good idea, if you visit this pond a lot, would be to throw in a specific bait, say worms, at the same time in the same place every day for a week sans hook, so when you throw in your line with said bait plus hook, they won't suspect a thing...

Crappie Fishing Tips From A Pro

Many people wrongly think the only time you can catch a Crappie is during the spawn. Your dead wrong if you think that. I make a living catching crappie year round. While they may be the easiest to catch during the Spring spawn, they can also be caught at other times of the year. Sometimes better than during the Spring spawn. It's called Crappie fishing, not Crappie catching!

The problem is that many fisherman think of only in terms of Spring fishing. Crappie are much like any other schooling fish and many of the same tactics that work on Bass, Walleye and White Bass work when Crappie fishing.

These fishing tips are here to help you extend your fishing season to the point you can catch fish year round.

My favorite times other than the spawn are the Fall and Winter months. Sometimes if the day heats up after a morning duck hunt, I'll head out into the lake and find a school of Crappie hanging above a submerged creek bank or over submerged timber.

Most times of the year, I'll find the fish out in the lake in 12 to 18 feet of water. I have caught them as deep as 25 feet during really cold or really hot spells. But day in and day out, 8 to 18 feet is where I'll find Crappie.

When I'm after deep water fish holding over structure, I'll use a 6 lb test line on a 7 foot light action spinning rod. This can have some obvious drawbacks if you hook into a big Striper or Catfish. Been there, done that!

If the fish are holding over a deep water break, I may go as light as a 6 foot graphite rod and 4lb test line. But beware! There are big bass and catfish lurking below!

If the water is a little murky or muddy, I like using a combination of bright and dark jigs. Like a two toned lure with a blaze orange head and black or brown body. Sometimes I'll also add some sound to my baits by using a spinner blade or shot. Don't get to loud with your sound, Crappie are spooky fish.

During early Summer mornings, I use a spider rig to find Crappie that aren't schooled up. Once the Sun get's up and the heat turns on, I use my fish locator to find schools of Crappie along deep water channels or over suspended timber.

Another good tactic to find scattered fish is suspending a jig from a slip float rig. Set out several rods, I like to use 6 or more, and drift along the lake until you start picking up fish.

Catchng these tasty fish isn't hard. You just have to change tactics and get out of spawn mode. Just remember, Crappie have to eat year round. You just need to be there when they get hungry and give them what they want to eat!

Year round Crappie fishing can be a blast. Challenging at times, yes. Is it worth it? When there's ice on the window sill and sleet is pelting the window and you're sitting at the Kitchen table downing some fresh caught golden brown filets...yeah it's worth it!

Jug Fishing For Catfish

Jug Fishing History

Jug fishing for catfish is a form of setline fishing that has gained tremendous popularity over the past ten years or so. While many anglers still prefer the tried and true setline tec 00004000 hniques of fishing with trotlines, limb lines, bank lines and yo-yo's there is a new breed of catfish angler that has emerged over the past ten years that prefers jug fishing over these other more traditional techniques of setline fishing.

Jug fishing has many "slang" terms that it is referred to which often confuses people. some other popular terms used to describe jug fishing are:

Jugline Fishing

Jug Line Fishing

Juggin'

Jugging

Bottle Fishing

Milk Jug Fishing

One of the appeals of jug fishing for catfish is the fact that there is a very low cost to get started with this form of fishing and it can be a very successful method of catfishing. Fishing with jugs instead of using more traditional lines (like trotlines) also offers increased flexibility which is part of the reason for the increased popularity.

For years, anglers would spend significant time setting trotlines and getting them placed and then would find that they were not catching catfish. The problem with this was then the time involved to pull up and move the trotline to a new location on the lake or river when it was not producing. The portability of jug fishing alleviates these issues.

Another reason for the popularity increase in jug fishing is the advancements made in the catfish jugs and commercially available juglines like those outlined in the making catfish jugs book. These "new breeds" of catfish jugs have revolutionized the world of jug fishing.

Jugging is a very easy way to get started catfishing and is an especially good technique for getting kids interested, as there is often non stop action and there is always something to do when juggin'.

Basic Techniques

The basic strategies behind jug fishing and very simple. Take a series of jugline rigs, set them out over an area of water baited with different baits and covering different depths and wait for some action.

Obviously this is a simplistic view of these technique but these are really the basics of getting started in the most simplistic terms possible.

Once the jugline rigs have been set for a while, you can collect the inactive ones that are not producing and move them to new locations and work towards increasing your effectiveness of catching fish. Once you determine that magic depth and structure that holds the target species of catfish then you will be very busy hauling in fish and baiting hooks on your other jugline rigs.

Building Catfish Jugs

Building a jug fishing rig can be a simple or advanced process. Some anglers choose a basic setup like a bleach bottle or coke bottle while others choose more advanced jugline rigs.

Once you have your choice of jugs established you should determine if you want to use a drifting jugline or anchored fishing jugs.

Drifting models typically involved a short piece of twine with a hook at the bottom and are meant to float across the water. Anchored models have a larger weight at the bottom (most often one pound) and are meant to stay in relatively the same location.

There are positives and negatives to both and if you are not sure which jugging rig you prefer or that will work best for you experiment with both and see what works best and then proceed with making more catfish jugs from there.

Once you have your jug and determined if you want anchored or drifting jugs you can proceed with rigging. This will require the following supplies:

#18 braided nylon twine (main line for anchored setups only)

#9 braided nylon twine ( leaders for drifting setups only)

Hooks (like circle hooks or kahle hooks)

Swivels (for anchored juglines)

Split shot weights (for drifting models)

1 Lb weights (for anchored models)

Rigging the drifting jugs is as simple as cutting a piece of #9 twine 2-3 feet long (or loner if preferred). Tie one end to the jugline and the other end to a hook. Add a small split shot sinker a few inches above the hook and you are ready to start fishing.

The anchored setups are a bit more involved. Cut a length of #18 twine and attach one end to the catfish jugs and the opposite end to the one pound weight. Three feet above the weight attach a swivel using a cats paw knot and then add a leader of #9 twine about 12 inches long, then attach the hook.

Move up three more feet and add another swivel, hook and leader. Most anglers prefer to only use two hooks but some will use more. Adding additional hooks to the catfish jugs increases the risk of being hooked so anglers should exercise caution.

As with any form of fishing, you should research your state and local laws prior to jug fishing for catfish. There may be regulations governing the size, color or number of hooks when jug fishing for catfish. In addition jugging is illegal in some states.
