    • ANSWER:
1st time I've ever heard of em' ~ only thing I could come up with is one on ebay (link). Lights up when fish nibble/bites and needs no weight/sinker. May want to enlarge pic of it on card (my eyes ain't that good enough anymore to read the fine print on it) to possibly get more info.?

  2. QUESTION:
Anyone know where to get lighthouse night fishing bobbers? color turns from red to green when you have a fish.?
The bobbers seem to have dropped off the market maybe 2-3 years ago. they were amazing for fishing in really clear lakes, because they would change from red to green (or green to red... cant remember) when you had a bite. Can anyone help me?

    • ANSWER:
well im sure you could probably find some at bass pro, gander mt., and dicks. if that fails, then im SURE graigs list has them, or ebay. or flea markets, and they will sell them to you CHEAP.

  3. QUESTION:
How do you catch a fish in a small lake, with a boat, fishing pole, bait, weights, bobbers...?
The lake is kinda stocked, it is a little piece of a larger lake, the larger lake is stocked, and there is a little stream leading to our lake.

    • ANSWER:
If it is a tributary off a large lake you probably could catch some crappie, bream, bass, and shell crackers.Just tie a hook on the end of your line, put a couple split shot weights about 6 inches above the hook, clamp on the float to fish about 2 1/2 feet deep, try some worms or crickets and see what happens. Also, my favorite is bottom fishing, just buy you a magazine to show you how to tie a Carolina rig and try that, its always worked for me.If you want to catch some decent bass, try using a plastic worm, or a rooster tail or beetle spin, they are also great attractors.Good luck, its just a matter of finding a pattern.

  4. QUESTION:
How does one make an Agitator Fishing Bobber?
Reading a lot lately about people using agitator bobbers for white bass and crappie fishing but cannot find how they are made. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I've never heard of such a thing. Of course, you could always agitate the float yourself by wiggling the rod tip instead of making a battery-operated one yourself.

  5. QUESTION:
What is the best way to arrange weights, bobbers, swivels, beads and whatever else for freshwater fishing?
I have Berkely's 8lb fireline crystal and a 6' 6" ugly stick classic with a Pflueger Supreme 8035MG spinning reel and i will be mainly fishing for largemouth bass and trout.

    • ANSWER:
Well there are countless ways to set up those things. It all just depends on what type of fish, and in what conditions you are fishing. The best I can suggest is to look up the names of different rigs, and how to set them up, you can then cross ref those rigs with what type of fish youa re fishing for. (use google for the cross ref).

Use http://www.anglersresource.org/rigsetup.html for a list of good rigs and how to set them up, and go from there.

      I hope this helps

Fishing Licence

You must have a fishing licence and punch card.

Family Fishing Holidays in France

France is a country that has a wonderful variety of fishing from the North through to the South and caters for fly fishing 00004000 , course and game fishing on a wide range of rivers and lakes. Plus there is plenty of coast line for the sea angler to enjoy as well.

Carp fishing, cat fishing, not forgetting course and pike fishing are just some of the holidays that you can enjoy in France and whilst some places cater for the dedicated angler, others are more family orientated with accommodation and activities for the non fishers.

There are several types of fishing holiday available and for trout fishing, you would need to book from around the middle to end of March up until around the first week of September, which is the only time frame you are allowed to fish for trout in France.

In certain areas of France, salmon fishing is prohibited all year, so it is always best to check on the area you are going, prior to thinking that you will be able to get a licence for fly fishing, just like that.

Every country has numerous different regulations and France is no exception, with specific rules in place for what type of fish you can catch, when you are allowed to catch certain species of fish and what equipment you are allowed to fish with.

For some, this can be a daunting prospect, especially if you are not fluent in French, and although in some areas it will be easier than others to organise your fishing venue and licence, it is often easier to pre-organise your fishing holiday, so do try and get as much information as possible.

You must have a fishing licence to fish in rivers, streams and lakes throughout France unless these are privately owned or booked as a fishing holiday where the fishing licence requirements are normally included, but it is advisable to check this out before you travel!

If you need to obtain your own fishing permit, these can usually be obtained from the local fishing tackle shop or alternatively from the local bar or tobac. But if you are not sure on what is required then you can get advice from the local tourist information board, which can also provide maps of where you can and cannot fish.

If you are only going to be on holiday in France for a short time, then you can get what is known as The Carte de Peche de Vacances, which covers an angler for up to fifteen consecutive days and can be used between 1st June and 30th November. However, outside of these dates an annual fishing licence is mandatory.

An annual permit may be used for the whole year but bear in mind that this will only be for one department unless you get it stamped for different areas that you may go to and this is something that you will need for all fresh water fishing.

When it comes to catfish and carp fishing, you can get a licence to do this in the local rivers or public lakes, but the majority of people will want to opt for a carp fishing holiday on a dedicated lake. And when you go to a dedicated privately owned lake for carp fishing, cat fishing, etc, then you will not normally have to worry about getting your own individual licence as this will already have either been sorted out by the travel agency or the owner under their regulations.

Boats are allowed to be used quite a bit in France, but you may need to have a separate part to your licence to enable you to use a boat, even if it is only for baiting. But be careful if you have an echo sounder in your boat, as you are not allowed to have both this and your tackle in the boat at the same time!

Also, night fishing is prohibited in a lot of places in France, but when on a private fishing lake, or if with the correct licence on certain waters, this can be allowed. If not, then you can only fish half hour after sunrise to half hour before sunset. Some places on the rivers seine, rhone, mosselle, oise, madine and rhine, etc do allow night fishing, but there are many places that do ban the use of a bivvy or tent even if night fishing is allowed and you may only get away with a brolly!

Sea fishing off of the Atlantic coast is excellent and you will be pleased to know that a licence is not needed, and you can go out on a boat to catch bass, conger eels and even tuna or surf cast for sea bream to name but a few.

Fly fishing for salmon and trout is available in lots of public canals and navigable rivers but as with most countries, these will also contain other fish such as Pike, so beware! However some of the best places to try your hand at fly fishing are often owned by groups and in this case you would need to pay the owners for a permit to fish as well as having your licence.

Some of the best salmon fishing in France can be found in the Pyrenees Atlantiques and the river Loire is also a major salmon fishery for France.

Some of the best fishing in France is for course fishing where you will find lots of different species, but with carp, catfish and pike being in abundance, especially in areas such as the Dordogne, Lot and Charente Maritime. But if you like fishing for black bass, the river Rhone is known as a premier bass fishery, as is the river Saone.

The fishing dates and times do vary each year in France, so it is always advisable to check on these before planning your fishing holiday, and at the end of the day, forget about the headaches of the licences, just enjoy the whole experience and you too could be in with a chance of catching a fish that has never been caught before!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Fishing Licence?
How old do you have to be to get a fishing licence????

    Thnx a million,
    rachoid09

    • ANSWER:
      rachel,
Each state varies, I know in CA., at the age of 16 one is required and anyone under is not. Add some additional information ie., what state ya' be in and am sure you'll get some feed-back from others ;) ...

  2. QUESTION:
    fishing licence?
what kind of licence ((or licences)) would you need to start a fishing tour in the gulf of mexico ((in texas))?

    • ANSWER:
First of all you would need a USCG License depending on the size vessel you want to operate, a smaller vessel that carries 6 paying passengers or less you will need an OUPV (operator of uninspected passenger vessel) also known as a 6 pack. On a vessel that carries 6 or more you will need to have a masters license. Again depending on the size of the vessel you may need a COI ( certificate of inspection) from the USCG. There are many other Federal requirements, so I would suggest to check into a USCG captain's license course to see if that is what you really want to do.

I don't know the business licensing requirements for the state of Texas but more than likely you would have to have a charter boat license & insurance.

      Good Luck

also u don't need a license if its on a private pond...

Bait Boxes For Fishing

Catfish Soap Bait Secrets - Sure To Bring The Best Catches

Stories abound about bizarre, catfish bait 'secrets' sure to bring in the best catches of monster catfish, and though none seem more far fetched to the average person, it seems that catfish soap bait just might be a bizarre secret that works quite well.

One thing to remember, if you plan to try your luck at catching catfish with soap bait, is that not all soaps are created equal. In fact, your every day, run of the mill soap just might act as a repellent rather than a bait to entice catfish onto your line. Your soap must be 100% pure, and contain no preservatives, no deodorants, perfumes or fancy ingredients.

Catfishermen have mentioned two brands in particular that work very well catching catfish. The two brands most well known to entice catfish are Zoat and Ivory brand soaps. These two brands have graced the tackle boxes of avid catfish anglers for centuries, but more and more catfish anglers are relying on family recipes for catfish soap bait that they claim never fails to put big, tasty catfish in their freezers trip after trip.

One such home made soap bait is your standard lye soap. Now, if you do not want to make your own, it can usually be found in various places such as specialty stores. If you would like to make your own, it is really not that difficult. Additionally, to the standard lye soap recipe, you can add your own custom ingredients to make it even more enticing to your quarry.

You will need:
6 C. water
24 oz. Pure Lye (sodium hydroxide)
12 lbs. animal fat or lard
*Warning!! Lye is caustic and must always be handled with care. Follow manufacturer's cautions, precautions, and warnings to ensure your safety!!
*Warning!! Lye reacts to metal. Always use lye only in glass or plastic containers!

Intructions: It is important that you pour the lye into the water (not the water into the lye) stirring to dissolve. Be very careful not to allow it to splash or spill. Attend to any spills or splatters with extreme care. Allow the lye and water mixture to come to room temperature. Melt the animal fat in a stove top safe container. Once the fat is melted, allow it to cool to about 90 degrees F.
Don't let it begin to solidify. As you stir the fat with a wooden (not metal) spoon, gradually stir in the lye and water mixture. The mixture will immediately start to thicken and solidify. Don't stop stirring until all the lye and water have been added, and a pudding like consistency is achieved. At this point, you may add ingredients to enhance your fishing experience. Some common ingredients to add are:
Anise
Garlic salt
Canned corn juice

The stirring process may take up to an hour to complete. Then, the soap mixture can be poured in to containers so it can set up. Most people use milk cartons or jugs cut down to a manageable size. It can take three or even four days or more for the soap to set up and harden. Remember, you must use only glass or plastic containers and utensils, and never put the soap mixture in metal containers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
would chinese takeout boxes work for selling fishing bait worms in?
my daughter wants to earn some money and we are considering raising worms to sell as bait.hoping to find a container that is more environmentally friendly than the classic styrofoam.
Paper Cups might work but may absorb to much liquid to last any period of time if all the worms weren't used right away.

    • ANSWER:
good idea experiment, put much and worms in there for about 5 days and tape shut. see if the cardboard shows signs of moister or water damage on the outside

  2. QUESTION:
    Fishing Bait/ Tackle Box?
My question is can you actually catch fish if you use the bait that comes in a tackle box? for example those little plastic fish attached a hook? or do you need to attach something like raw shrimp to it?

    • ANSWER:
Soft Plastic lures account for hundreds of thousands, (if not millions) of fish caught per year.

Like any lure, knowing how to rig them and properly retrieve them (to make them more enticing) is the key.

Please read the reviews on Berkley Gulp and Power Bait and make your own mind up:

      1. Berkley Gulp Minnow- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Gulp!-Minnow/product/71458/-1496546

      2. Berkley Power Bait Worm- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-PowerBait-Original-Power-Worm-7/product/38256/-1210749

      3. Berkley Shrimp Powerbait- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Gulp!-Alive!-Shrimp/product/96069/-1411226

However, the plastic worms and soft plastic's that come "free" in a tackle box CAN be used but they need "help" to make them more usable. If you apply a good fish attractant it will improve their fish catching abilities. (I've found that "Kick'N" products to be the best fish attractant in Freshwater and any shrimp and/or pogy scented attractant in Saltwater )- http://www.basspro.com/Kickn-Bass-Scent-Fish-Attractant/product/10213327/-1645454

      Saltwater- http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Gulp!-Alive&153;-Saltwater-Spray-Attractant/product/100704/-1492439

Unfortunately, the COLOR'S usually given in a tackle box combo are usually (for lack of a better word) "horse-sh!t".

Like everything in life- "You get what you pay for".

      Hope this helps?

+ a handle for the landing net http://www.mullarkeys.co.uk/fishing/nets-and-handles/match-fishing-landing-net-handles/0/dinsmores/5072/

lol thanks dude, yea i caught the hell outa trout last summer when i first got here, but yea this tackle will be used all over the us tho, im pretty sure ill have to put my own box together tho

    • ANSWER:
Montana is well known as a Trout fishing hot spot. You will definitely want to include (or purchase) some Fly's and possibly an inexpensive Fly outfit.

The only place I know where you can buy bulk fishing items in a tackle box "ready to go" is either at a garage sale/auction, craigslist, or EBay.

      The problem?

You will very rarely find a "kit" that perfectly fits exactly where & what you want to fish for.

Your best bet is to put together a tackle box yourself. Here's a basic list of equipment for Montana:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
ive just taken up carp fishing should i buy delkim or fox bite alarms and why?
ive just taken up carp fishing this season and ive got to buy some bite alarms should i buy delkim or fox alarms or what make of bite alarms do you recommend to buy and from where
    THANKS

    • ANSWER:
      Hi andrehamson,

In case you were looking for a SENSIBLE answer to your question as opposed to the utterly nonsensical 'answer' from Backwater Charlie, then I'll do my best to help. Obviously in the United States, they have no desire to fish at night or re-bait any other rods one may have in the water.. Still, I guess, the prospect of having more than the one rod in the water at any one time may be a little challenging for our American friend.

So, both Fox and Delkim are very reputable brands and they both make quality systems. Delkim have got their reputation from the fact that they produce alarms that last for years and years. The only downside to Delkims (in my humble opinion) is that the designs look a little dated. If the look of the alarm is not of any interest to you then go for Delkims, otherwise, if you'd like a great, modern looking device then Fox would be perfect.

      I hope that helps.

  2. QUESTION:
Can i use delkim ev plus bite alarms with a different Receiver/sounder box?
my alarm setup was 2x fox micron alarms and i recently purchased a Prologic Senzora VTSW XDR Receiver Set to make them wireless.
I went fishing over night in early december (before the big freeze) and woke to find some @?*$%£~# had stolen my alarms (they left the prologic stuff) i went on ebay to buy some more and noticed the delkim ev plus at around £60 ive always liked delkims but the way they work is so different from other alarms i was wondering if they will work with the prologic Receiver, or has anyone used delkims with sounder box of a different make

p.s. im a match fisherman at heart so i don't do enough carp fishing to justify a full wireless delkim setup if i cant resolve this ill just go back to the fox microns.

    thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Gutted to hear about your loss, those thieving bastards! I too used the micron and upgraded, but to the EOS, and as good as they are they are so fiddly to set up if you remove the batteries as I do after every session. I'm so tempted to switch to Delkim as they are way better than fox according to friends(they also have an anti theft alarm) and have been told in good faith that you can use cheap universal receivers with the Delkim. There is a draw back in that you will pick up any one elses runs in close by swims that are using alarms which is a tad annoying especially at night. Your best bet is to go to your tackle shop and ask and they might test them for you.

  3. QUESTION:
    what bite alarms to buy?
I what to buy a bite alarm for about £60 pounds i have narrowed it done to three alarms the: FOX EOS,DELKIM EV and the GARDNERS
could some one me with one would be the best bye

    • ANSWER:
don't worry about that expensive crap, im sure if you go to a tackle shop (fishing shop) your can find a bell that you can put onto you line, its just as the expensive crap but will save you a lot of money.

Live Bait For Fishing

Walleye live bait:Master Fishing For Walleye!

Old School Walleye Fishing Family Secrets

This statistic has been documented on many fishing surveys. There have been many fishing surveys published that show fishing for walleye with live bait accounts for over 2/3thrds of all walleyes that are caught on a walleye rod and reel combo. Many of the die hard walleye anglers who claim they use artificial lures for walleyes 90% of the time, will still put live bait on their lures when the walleye fishing gets slow.

There are many walleye live baits that work well, but the best The best baits for walleye include minnows and other small fish, night crawlers and leeches. In some unique walleye habitat situations at different times of the year, other kinds of baits such as water dogs and frogs will work, but the majority of the time they won't produce like the old reliables.

Live bait used for walleye fishing are not always available all year round. Leeches one of the old dependable fishing for walleye live baits, cannot be used if the temperature of the water is below 50degrees. For one you won't find any in the bait shops because leeches are not active when the water is cold and will not swim into the leech traps. You will find only a few bait shop dealers who will keep shiner minnows during the summer months because they die quickly in the dealers tanks and in the fishermen's minnow buckets.

The first thing you need to do when you are making live bait selection for walleye is to determine what live baits work in the different seasons. Although night crawlers are a poor choice for a bait selection to fish for walleye in the spring time when the season changes to summer night crawlers are one one of the best baits to use to catch walleyes. You can use minnows for walleye fishing in the spring and in the fall, but they are poor choice to use in the summer.

Selecting the right type of minnow is important at certain times of the year. For example, during the spring time shiner minnows is a good live bait choice and will produce better the some other species of minnows such as redtail chubs. In the fall season shiners are a poor choice for a live bait selection to fish for walleye while a redtail chub would be an excellent choice. It's a good idea to check with your local bait shop to find out what live baits work best to catch walleye in that area.

There has been discussion by many fisherman that ribbon leaches are the best live bait for walleye.Leaches are an excellent bait because because they swim, and squirm constantly after they are placed on the hook when the temperature is above 50deg. They are not a good choice in cold water because they are not active at temperatures below 50degs.

Make sure the live bait you use choose to fish for walleye, it is active and lively. When walleyes are really biting you can get by with a half dead minnow or chewed-up night crawler, but a struggling minnow or squirming crawler will normally catch more fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is the benefit of using Sawdust to preserve live fishing bait? eg. Shrimp Yabbies Prawns.?
I have heard that the use of Sawdust is great for storing live bait like shrimp, yabbies, prawns etc. I am wondering WHY,.. what are the benefits in this method?. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
saw dust alone grabs moisture from the air. Saw dust mixed with water distributes moisture. If you were to add shrimp to saw dust alone, it will dry out the shrimp. Add water to the saw dust and the shrimp will live longer and stay fresher.
Saw dust is also light weight compared to using sand or water. Therefore you can travel longer by foot without added weight, even when the saw dust is damp, not soaked. Add a few ice cubes to the mix and you can fish just about all day with fresh bait. Layer the bait in damp saw dust, add some ice on top and go fish. ~Good luck catchin'.

  4. QUESTION:
what is the best color braided line for saltwater live bait fishing? Yellow, green or Red?

    • ANSWER:
Green colored main line with a piece of fluorocarbon leader.

      :)

  5. QUESTION:
how would i go about catching anchovies for live bait fishing?
im using a pole that's about 8 feet long and i have another pole about 12 feet long. i wanted to use the smaller pole to catch live anchovies so i could use them on the bigger pole but i don't know how or what with to rig my pole so i was looking for some pointers as to how i should go about doing that.

    • ANSWER:
For pier fishing, use a small "sabiki" style rig, with about size 8 or 10 hooks. Work it in the shade of a piling, and you'll get whatever small fish are there (smelt, mackerel, perch, sardines, or sometimes anchovies). Any relatively small fish like that will work as bait. I used to do this as a kid off Venice Pier, and yes, I caught a few anchovies mixed in with the other stuff. Anchovies are plankton feeders, but they did bite the little flies on the rig.

If you're on a boat, you're going to have to find some structure or a free-swimming school of fish -- sometimes anchovies or the like are packed tightly at the surface and you can get them with a dip net, or if you work the sabiki deeper over structure or in a school of fish you can sometimes load up.

If you're casting from the shore, you might manage baitfish on a sabiki, but it'll be harder, both hooking them and to bring them in through the waves.

Catfish Lures

Here is a cheerful volunteer for the test

Catfish Lures - Can Catfish be Caught Using Lures

Are you a fisherman who loves fishing for cat? Are you looking to start catfishing but have never really don 00004000 e it before? Whatever your experience level with catfish fishing, it's normal to have questions and concerns. Can catfish be caught using lures? This is a common question and the truth is that they can and quite often, they are. How is this done and what types are used?

Statistics have shown throughout fishing history that catfish can in fact, be caught using artificial lures although most seem to prefer live baits. In fact, this theory was proven in the Nebraska Master Angler Program of 2002 in which 415 qualifying catfish were caught and a good percentage were caught with catfish lures. Many other states have their own contests and programs which have shown this to be true.

Spinners
Spoons
Jigs tipped with minnows

Many of these catfish were caught with these lures by accident - meaning the fisherman was trying for another type of fish and snagged a hungry cat instead. But this goes to show that if they really want it, they will come after anything, even artificial lures. Even though they may have been accidental catches while the angler was going for bass or walleye, etc, this still tells us something interesting; that catfish may be targeted with lures successfully.

If a hungry cat will snag an artificial lure when it wasn't even intended for him, then it seems practical that you could catch one if you were actually trying. So just how does one go about doing such a thing?

If you are using the right lures in the right conditions, then it is quite possible to catch a catfish with a lure. You can catch channel cat, blues and even flatheads with artificial lures if you have your timing right and you know what you are doing. To increase your chances at success with catfish lures, there are some things you should be aware of.

While catfish are very well known for their sense of smell, they also have a great sense of sight when the waters are clear enough. When fishing for catfish in muddy waters, this doesn't benefit anyone very much but if the water is clear, you can take advantage of the great eyesight of the catfish to help you catch them with lures.

In addition to this acute eyesight, catfish also have great hearing. Their ears are designed in such a way to allow for hearing a wide range of frequencies under water. And of course, as you probably know well already, the sense of smell and taste in the catfish is rival to any other in the animal kingdom.

The skin, whiskers, surface of the mouth and the gill are all covered with taste buds and they can smell as well as taste prey from very far away. When catfish are looking for food, they will use as many of their senses as possible to help them find a meal. This is a good thing to keep in mind when using lures to catch catfish.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can I use bass lures on catfish?
I'VE NEVER BEEN CATFISH FISHING, I HAVE NOTHING BUT BASS LURES AND TACKLE. BESIDES THE LEADERS IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I CAN USE? DO SPINNERS OR BUZZ BAITS OR ANYTHING WORK ON CATFISH?

    • ANSWER:
I have caught a few on crank baits, but it is very rare. You need to get chicken liver, or some kind of blood bait designed for catfish. I have caught them on minnows as well. But lure fishing for catfish is not something you should do if you are targeting catfish.

  2. QUESTION:
Can you catch catfish on lures?
If you can what are some good lures to catch them on?

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, absolutely. Catfish will take lures, but not just any lure, and you have to fish it properly. Catfish are bottom feeders, so you usually have to get something down to them, and it has to be something they can run down. A fast-moving rooster tail high in the water column probably isn't going to interest a catfish moving along the bottom, for example. But if you've got something you drag along the bottom, something that imitates maybe a sculpin or crawdad, a catfish will take it.

One reason that catfish are most often fished with bait is because they rely less on sight than touch, taste, smell, and water movement. Those big fleshy lips of theirs, and those barbles (the whiskers) are what they use to hunt. Picture a hog snuffling around in the mud -- they're not looking, they're sniffing and feeling. Catfish search for food by the feel of the prey and movement of water around the prey. They're also sniffing around for detritus (dead stuff) so they use smell and taste, too. So, something smelly and wiggly is likely to attract a catfish. A wad of stinkbait on the bottom is very effective, because it will put out an odor and the catfish will come to it. However, if you have a lure bouncing on the bottom, maybe one that has a little aromatic rubber in it, you can call in catfish to that, too.

Just remember -- you gotta get down to where they are. Fishing up in the water column will be much less effective.

  3. QUESTION:
What are the best lures to use to catch bass, catfish, trout, and bluegill?
i need specific names of the best, i am just starting out and i want the best gear to start out with.

    • ANSWER:
for catfish I prefer chicken livers or stinkbait and lots of patience. for bass ratl traps and big beetle spins. trout power bait or rooster tails.bluegill small beetle spins. it takes awhile to find your pesonal style but my preferred method for all fish is a good shady spot on the river bank a good chair and either worms or minnows because you are liable to cath all kinds of different fish and its relaxing.

  4. QUESTION:
What kind of lures work best for catching catfish?

    • ANSWER:
lures dont work well on catfish. If you want the best bait for catfish, espically bigger species.use Shad Guts and Shad Side.put it on a single size 3 or 4 hook.throw it near a brush pile or tree or in the middle of a rocky dam which should produce the most catfish.(channels and blues) if you want smaller cats use liver and worms. For Flathead use LIVE! bullheads,Blue gills, and Green Sunfish.Be Sure to use strong line when going for big fish 20 pound test is not a good choice use atleast 50 or 60 on up.

  5. QUESTION:
What kind of lures work best for catfish?

    • ANSWER:
Not lures but something with smell. The best bait for channel catfish is a chunk of ole' stinky liver. Either chicken or beef liver will do fine but beef seems to stay on the hook better. What you need to do is leave the liver out in the sun in an old tupperware with garlic or butter or both. After a few days you will smell the most perfect catfish bait there is. Cut it into chunks and slab it on your hook. Good luck fishin'!

Fishing Boats - Different Boats In Different Sizes!

Boats made of aluminum come in two varieties, that is, the fourteen foot and the twenty-two foot varieties which can accommodate up to three people. These kinds of boats are very much available in different models, like the v- bottom or flat bottom which come along with the casting decks. The decision regarding the choice can be finalized based on the individual's budget and preference.

For recreational purpose, fiberglass is used to make boats that are usually fifteen to thirty feet long and are made for good endurance and speed. These boats are used preferably used by fishermen who want good speed. But, maintenance and repair of these fiberglass boats are difficult because they are heavier compared to aluminum.

Certain boats are manufactured to serve multiple purposes, being able to adapt to both saltwater and freshwater conditions. For a person living near both the freshwater and the coast, and for those with varying interests, these boats are best serving.

Bass boats are said to have a sleek and low profile, that suit fishing with two to three anglers. These bass boats can extend up to twenty-six feet, and are being nicely designed for a fishing type called bass fishing.

Other types of boats include inflatable, folding, less sturdy, and more portable and adaptable boats. Even though, these do not posses the endurance of sturdier boats, these provide great results in calm water.

Anglers looking for large fish can use the sport fishing boats which are provided with compartments for sleeping, provisions for cooking, plumbing and are capable of housing fishers for days together. This makes long fishing trips very much possible and very enjoyable.

The walks about boats are fishing boats that are large in size, extensively used in coastal areas, huge bays and in the Great lake area. They are basically used by anglers looking for salmon and other species of the ocean. These boats house rod holders and various other attachments which make following big fish, easy and efficient.

Irrespective of the variety of fishing one wants to perform, recreational boats are always available that would suit one's interest. Also, all the available boats are definitely present in a large range of price level and sizes. Hence, one can assure oneself of choosing the perfect boat, providing the individual the ideal weekend vocation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How come fishing reels come in different sizes???
I was at a sporting goods shop today and noticed that there were fishing reels that were different sizes. Some were attached to Ugly Stiks and were a lot smaller than the Shimano ones. Does the size of the fishing reel affect the size of the fish you catch???

    • ANSWER:
The only reason fishing reels come in those different sizes is because they are each, so to speak, weight classes. The smallest of the reels is designed for light class lines (2,4,6 lb) the next size up will most likely 8,10,12 lb, next size up, 12,15,20, so on, and so forth. Next time you look at those reels, look closely at the spools, they will have numbers. For example: I'm looking at one of my rods, and the numbers are; 2/195 4/125 6/65 Which represents the recommended line sizes, and an approx. of how much you can put on the spool. For 6 lb test, it says It would only be able to safely accomodate up to 65 yards of that line(since 6 lb test has a larger diameter than say, 4 lb test). Which will help you decide exactly how much line you will need to buy. And since lines come in vast amount of length spools to buy, you wouldnt need 300 yards of line (unless you like to respool quite often) when 150 yards will be sufficient. And I recommend keeping extra line handy in case your line snaps when you have alot of line out. Or you get a nasty bird nest, you can quickly change the line, and get back to fishing.

And the size gear to size fish ratio...no such thing. Living in the middle of florida where I know the only thing I will catch when I got fishing in a lake around here, is a bass. I will use light gear. like a 4-8lb outfit. I've actually caught a 5lb bass on 4lb test. Just remember to adjust your drag accordingly, (25% of the breaking strength of the line). So keep in mind what your fishing for, and how big they get, and prepare accordingly. And use common knowledge; if your going grouper fishing, your not going to want to use 10lb test. for obvious reasons. And theres no telling how big of fish your going to catch, they dont line up and let you pick them out to catch, unfortuantely, it doesnt work that way.

  2. QUESTION:
for fishing hook sizes is it the smaller the number the bigger the hook?
is a size 1 hook the biggest? and then a 2 smaller than that and then 3 then 4 and so on.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Evan
One way of looking at hook sizes is to consider them in two separate scales, one for freshwater fishing hooks and a second scale for saltwater fishing hooks.

The freshwater hook scale starts with the very smallest being a size 32, which will adorn a tiny dry fly to tempt the most suspicious of trout. The next size up (larger) is a 30, then 28, 26, 24 etc (through even numbers only) to a size 2, and then finally a size 1 - the largest freshwater hook, which you might use to present a good-sized lobworm to a large chub.

At this point the scale for saltwater hook sizes takes over, starting with hook size 1/0 increasing in size through 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 etc through to a massive 20/0 for the largest shark.

For more on fishing hook sizes, take a look at http://www.go-saltwater-fishing.com/fishing-hook-sizes.html

  3. QUESTION:
What is the difference between the sizes of fly fishing flies?
A website shows "sizes 8-12". What does this mean and what should I use for trout?

I think it has to do with weight and size but which way does it go. The higher number...... or the lower the number?

    • ANSWER:
The size of a fly fishing fly is, as you have noted, indicated by a number. The smaller the number, the LARGER the fly. Most trout dry flies run in sizes from 12 - 18, although midges can go down as small as 22 (a real eye-strainer when you are watching them float down stream). Streamers may run larger for trout, say a size 6 or 8 wooly bugger. Your best bet for selecting the right size is to find a book or website that has a hatch table. Most of those will give you the size of the fly that most closely approximates the size of the bugs in that hatch for a specific region during a specific time of the year. A good example of this the "Trout Stream Insects - An ORVIS Streamside Guide" by Dick Pobst. You should also check out the Field Guide "Guide Books" posted on Cabelas.com. Those provide some very helpful information for the starting fly fisher. Good luck and tight lines!

  4. QUESTION:
    Are fishing hook sizes standardized?
I have purchased different brands of swim bait hooks (Mustad and Lake Fork) that are the same size (3/0) on the package, but one brand seems to have a longer shank.

What does the size measure? Is it the gap or the shank or something else?
The Mustad hooks that I bought have a much longer shank and fit my swim bait better than the Lake Fork brank. The Lake Fork hooks have a shorter shank that forces the hook too close to the front of the head causing me to miss a lot of strikes.

    • ANSWER:
Fish hooks are generally measured and sized by the gap between the hook and the shank. Almost all hooks come in various shank lengths and configurations, plus different diameter wire sizes.
As you see by your purchase, a 3/0 should be almost the same no matter what brand.
I have some "Eagle Claw" #6 hooks about fifty years old, and they are the same size as a number #6 hook of today.

  5. QUESTION:
Best ocean fishing places in Southern California?
I'm going on a fishing trip on sunday, and i need to know of a good boat with not too many anglers and good fish sizes.

    • ANSWER:
if l knew the answer to that, l would be going myself. and probably Peter would want to join in.
the fishing changes drastically from day to day. you go out on a boat that has had a good week for white seabass and halibut expecting to do the same, skipper sez "water's dirty. it's a little rough". wind up running up the coast fishing local kelp and rockpiles for very small rockfish.

Flounder Fishing Secrets

The tasty flounder is a great sport fish you can target in Rhode Island waters, and is also relatively easy to catch. Every day during the summer in Rhode Island hundreds of boats are out there along the south shore targeting this great fish. By following a few tips you can enjoy success and become a better flounder fisherman. Summer flounder are a funny-looking spotted brownish fish with a totally white underside, often nearly as wide as they are long. They have two eyes on one side of their head and swim with the eyes upward (which are on the brown side), tending to cruise along the bottom looking for food, not moving too far away from it. They cruise about 1-3 feet off the bottom looking for something to eat, usually taking advantage of the current from the tides to cover ground. Often they will spook some small life form as they approach, and a small puff of mud or motion is sent into the water which attracts the flounder to that area and where he will pounce on the poor creature. This interesting habit is the one we exploit when fishing for them.

Ok, so youve decided to go out and find some flounder. Well, they arent always in the same place every day. As the season progresses, you have to go into deeper and deeper water to find them, as the water heats up during the season. Sometimes they move east or west with the tide. They prefer sandy bottoms, so these are where you want to be and you always drift for them. If there are areas where bait hang out near the bottom they will be there. Never spend more than 15 minutes on a drift when searching for them, that is the point many anglers dont understand, keep moving until you find a good drift where you catch 4 or more fish. Then keep doing that drift until it no longer produces well. Sometimes I may move 10 times or more before finding them. If the drift speed is slow, the flounder fishing will be slow. If the drift is too fast, either slow the boat down with a drift sock or sea anchor, or give it up if you cant slow the boat down enough to catch fish. Some anglers will stay on a drift an hour or more even when its not producing.

Onward to rigs and methods.
A typical flounder rig uses a 3-way swivel with sinker snap and a 30 leader with some kind of fluke rig attached. It can be as simple as a bare hook, or very elaborate with spinners, small squids and beads, etc. The sinker is important, as you need to have your rig on the bottom to catch these fish. Let me say that again, if your rig does not stay on the bottom, you cannot catch these fish. The rig itself, will often be a simple green squid and a spinner blade works pretty well. Catching colors can change, and size of the spinner blade. But a bare hook doesnt always work that well. Of course, we always put bait on the hook. It might be squid, smelts, peanut bunker, or strips of flounder belly. Depends on what is working that day. Squid is usually a good bet to bring. Cut it into long strips and hook it a couple times before putting it down. Now, as for sinker weight, use the smallest sinker that will keep your rig on the bottom, so you can jig it. The rig should always be jigged, never let it drag on the bottom. A gentle jigging, lifting the rod tip no more than 12 and back down till you feel the sinker hit the bottom. Down below, what happens is your rig is moving as the boat moves along, and each time the sinker hits the bottom, it makes a noise and a puff of sand or mud. This noise and puff of mud attracts the attention of the flounder, and the bait on the hook tastes good. This is what brings them in. Sometime more jigging is better, other times less jigging is better. Youll have to spend a little time figuring out what the prefer for that day.

Now, on to hooking the fish. The big mistake I see here is everyone wants to haul back quickly as soon as they feel a hit. This is a really bad idea, as the flounder typically grabs the very end of the bait farthest away from the hook. So when you jerk the rod, it just pulls the bait out of his mouth, or off the hook, and you miss the fish. The trick is to lift the rod tip slowly until he is hooked or lets go of the bait. Lifting the rod slowly can aggrevate the fish into taking more of the bait into its mouth so you can hook it. Once he is hooked, then you can proceed with reeling him in. Use a light tip rod, a rod with a heavy tip makes it hard to feel the hits and hard to tell when youve hooked the fish. Put two anglers side-by-side, one with with a heavy rod, and the other with a light rod. The angler with the light rod will outfish the one with the heavier rod every time, given the same level of skill. I have seen it happen many times.

If you want to catch big ones, put on a big bait and be patient. Youll still get little ones going after the bait, but all the activity can attract the bigger ones. If you follow some of these points youll be rewarded with more flounder in the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What hook size/sinker weight for dropshot (in my case)?
I am trying to catch a Rainbow Trout in a river. What would be an appropriate hook size (or range of hook sizes) with what appropriate sinker weight (or range of weights) should I be using?

PS: I am using an earth worm to catch it.

    • ANSWER:
I would use an Eagle Claw Baitholder hook, anywhere from a #4-#8. A #6 hook would be ideal. As for the weight, 1/16 or 1/8-ounce should do.

  2. QUESTION:
When Texas rigging a 6" plastic lizard, what size sinker should I use?
I'm using a baitcasting setup with a 7' MH rod and 12 lb fluoro.

    • ANSWER:
1/8th ounce. Not too light and not too heavy.

  3. QUESTION:
North Carolina Fishing Help-What size sinker?
I am going fishing in Duck, North Carolina in July. About July 17th or so. I have been down there before fishing for spot/pompano/kingfish. Fish like that. I forgot what size sinker i used "/...Can someone help me out about the size sinker i would use to be successful in catching small/medium sized fish in North Carolina. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
Most of the time, (due to tidal current and wave action) the smallest weight you could possibly use would be 2 OZ, and the "average" would 3-4 OZ. On a VERY windy day you might need to go as high as 6 OZ.

Like Robert suggested, it depends on the tidal current and conditions.

  4. QUESTION:
What size reel should I use to fish for striper bass?
Making a trip to the California Delta (Sacramento side) so I'm trying to get geared up to catch some fish! Also, if you can advise on other tackle, ie hooks, line, sinkers sizes. I could use all the info I could get. OUT!

    • ANSWER:
Stripers are one power house fish. I would only recomment bait casting reels because of the strength of the drag. Minimum size would be equivilant of a 6500 ABU garcia loaded with at least 20 lb test of some type. I used mono.
I have fished for stripers by the 80 bridge in Sac, and we used large jointed plugs, ie, Rapala J13 in various colors, and large jointed Rebels. #9 Rapala shad raps also work.
We fished at night and anchored above the bridge pilings
and let the plugs out to the front edge of the pilings and let them work in the current.
Solid tackle is needed, as I have had them hit so hard they broke a J13 in half, and they will not give up until almost dead.
When one hits , hang on and have a great time. When it is all over you will have one of the finest fish tablefare there is

  5. QUESTION:
Help fishing with a sinker and hook?
Hey. I've been fishing for all my life only float fishing for smaller fish. I'm tiring of that method now and I'm interested in different types of fishing.

At the pond where I fish I've noticed people just using a sinker, hook and something which detects fish bites. Before I try it I want to know a few things (which is obviously why I've come here =p)

    1) What is the rubber instrument I've seen fisherman using to detect fish bites? They've been sitting with their rod sideways from where they've cast. When they get a bite a rubber thing on their rod moves. Any idea what this is and how to use it?

    2) Are there any devices I'm missing? I've only been watching other people, I've probably not seen something that's quite important

    3) I'm going to be fishing for carp. Will this work?

    4) Any specific bait for this? I was thinking boilies.

    5) A good hook size for fish around 3-6lbs

    6) Is there a "right" line length to leave between the hook and the sinker?

    7) I have a few sinkers. Does the shape/size matter, or is the only variable how far I can cast (they're the same colour metal)?

    8) Do I need a certain colour for certain fish, or will it not matter as the sinker is not near the hook?

If you can answer most/all of these best answer is coming your way. Web links are okay, as long as they're very informative.

    Thanks in advance =)

    • ANSWER:
I will try with what little info you have told about what type rod and reel, and what line strength you use. Carp will eat dough balls you can make and if you made them up in advance use corn water (drain a can of nibblet corn water into the container you store the dough in)
      1) it is a useless tool for people who drink and play cards with a line out thinking they can call themselves fishermen
      2) only what you haven't read about in the library about fishing
      3) Carp have tough damn mouths and bend thin wire hooks very easy
      4) dough is good
      5) size 3-6 hooks carp don't have large mouths but they are really strong and tough. get thick wire hooks, Mustad and Owners I think might be to thin
      6) depth is what tells you your leader length deep deep water (wrong place) shallow 4-6 feet is where you have your best results and 15-20 inches will be perfect
      7) shape and size is of no matter the actual wieght is and if it's too big when you cast it when it hits the surface and drags the bait in behind it the friction on the bait from the water will losen the bait maybe even remove the bait so I tend to use little weights and not cast too far but then I fish from a boat
      8) weight color means diddly (except) when on lead heads I paint my lead to match the plastic swimbaits that I use on them, it gives a head to the bait. I also paint the back of the leadheads red giving them with the plastic on it the look of flared gills and it has increased my catch for everything (except vegetarian species) which I think carp are....

Fly Fishing Tips And Information

Weather your a novice fly fisherman or a seasoned angler that would like to improve your fly fishing skills, these tips are goo 00004000 d information for any fly fisherman.

1.Choosing the Right Rod

Choosing the right rod for you is very important in fly fishing. If you don't have the right rod, you are probably not going to do very well with your casting among other things. There are many different types of rods that you can choose from. How do you know which one is going to be right for you? For the beginner, it is probably best to go with a synthetic type of rod. These rods are usually less expensive and are more durable as well as not needing as much care as other types of rods, such as bamboo.

2.Choosing Good Fly Line

Good line is also very important. While the rod is important for casting, you will find that the right line is also very important and can affect the way that you cast as well. You want to make sure your line is the correct weight for your rod and the type of fishing you will be doing. Also, real cheap fly line or the wrong weight line could break and cause you to loose your fish. So be sure to do some research on the best line to use. There is a lot of information online or your could ask someone at your local sporting goods store or where you buy your fly line.

3.Improving Your Casting Technique

There are many fly casts, from basic casts for the beginner to difficult spey casts and so on. The best tip for improving your casting techniques of course is practice. The other is to get a fly casting book, when choosing a fly casting book, you want to get one that has easy to follow instructions and illustrations. Try to only work on one cast at a time until you have a pretty good handle on it and are starting to feel comfortable preforming that cast.

Of course, it will take some practice to get it right, but the more you practice your casting technique, the better you are going to get. There are some very good books available on fly casting, check the links in the authors signature at the end of this article for more information.

4.Always Carry Extra Flies

Always carry an assortment of flies as well as extra flies for the type of fish you are fishing for. It is usually not a great idea to go out on a fishing trip with just one type of fly. Even if you have had great luck with that type of fly in the past, you won't be sure what the fish will be responding to this time. And always carry extra flies in case you loose one.

5.Matching The Hatch

One of the greatest challenges of fly fishing is to "match the hatch", that is, to choose a fly which most closely resembles the predominant insect on the stream at the time during which you fly fish. The emergence of aquatic insects is fondly referred to as the "hatch" by fly fishers. The fish eat insects throughout the course of the day which vary in size, color and species.

These tips provide valuable information on how to observe the stream and select a fishing fly which will be most successful in luring fish to bite.

a. Know what insects are hatching at the time of year and time of day that you are fishing.

b. Observe the surface of the water to identify what insects the fish are feeding on. Having a basic knowledge of entomology, the study of insects, or having an insect identification guide will help.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Fishing line question about which lb to use. ?
If i was gonna do some hobby fishing, nothing serious like bringing in marlin or sharks or anything. Just some freshwater fishin in some ohio lakes and ponds. What lb would i want? I just want to be prepared to bring in whatever takes my hook. 4lb? 6lb?

P.S. side question, which best for mostly bank fishing, spinnin or castin? I am prob gonna buy new rod/reel too.

    • ANSWER:
      I would say 10LB.

10LB can handle most any sized Bass or Bluegill in Ohio and is slightly stronger and has better abrasion resistance than 8lb.

The best lines for a casual fisherman who is seeking to catch Bass, Bluegill, Cats would be somewhere between 8-12LB. If you think your going to mainly be Catfishing I'd suggest- 12LB, if you think mainly Bass- 10LB, if your thinking mainly Bluegill- 8LB.

      Go with a Spinning reel.

Spinning reels are MUCH more easier to use and (BONUS) most decent spinning reels you purchase come with an extra spool. So, on one spool you can put 8LB, (for when your feeling like catching Bass/Bluegill), and on another spool you can put 12LB, (when you feel like Cat-fishing).

Make SURE to purchase a reel that has 2 spools and your issue's with line size will be over.

The cheapest rod that has the capacity to catch all three species of fish??- a 7' Ugly Stik Lite, ().

      A decent inexpensive reel??

Mitchell 300XE (), Shimano, Sedona (on sale at Http://www.cabelas.com for ), Pflueger Trion , Pflueger President ,Shimano Sahara , Etc.

Even a casual fisherman wants to have gear that works. Spending LESS than on a reel and on a rod is like playing russian roulette with your money-maybe you win, maybe NOT!

Good brands of equipment & gear- Shimano, Daiwa, Pflueger, Ugly Stik, Mitchell, Berkley, Plano, Owner, Etc.

      Hope this helps? Good fishing.

  2. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:

  3. QUESTION:
Fishing from the bank with a strong current? -Dams and Rivers?
How do you keep your line in a set spot in the water?
I like to fish at the local dam but the current just drags my line and it usually ends up close to the bank downstream.
Same thing with fishing in the river.

I have tried all kinds of heavy weights. What am I doing wrong?
If I could get it to stay in one place I know I would land a lot more fish!

    Advice welcome! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
well depends on how strong the current is....and how long ur letting it sit in the water....eventually it will work its way to the bank......

i have used a rock in the past on some rivers...worked great.......basically took about a 2 pound rock tied it to my line about 2 foot under the hook stringer......then released the catch on my reel and tossed the rock into the river...........basically pitched it like a baseball out into the river slightly upstream....worked pretty good.....ended up with 23 eating size fish that day........was about a 9 hour period altogether....was camping

have seen ppl using 3-5 1 pound lead weights in same river depending on water flow......

  4. QUESTION:
How long must Nikki;s fish line be?
Nikki is fishing from a bank 35 feet above the water level. In this location, the fish tend to feed at 49 feet below the surface. How long must Nikki's fish line be to reach the fish? (For example: 16 feet)

    Thanks for the help

    • ANSWER:
You just need to add the two together

      35 + 49 = 84

  5. QUESTION:
is braided fishing line better for spinning than monofilament fishing line?
One of the main problems which I always have with monofilament line is that I get loose loops developing on the spool of my spinning reel when I go fishing, and if I try to rectify the problem on the bank side by pulling the line from the spool until I reach the loose loops, I usually end up with a birds nest of a mess that ultimately results in me having to cut away the tangle and start again from scratch.

I have never used braided fishing line before, however I was wondering if this problem would be less likely to happen if I did use a braid?

    • ANSWER:
Braid is much, much better, yes. You won't have as many problems with loops (that are caused by line twist) although the problem doesn't go away completely. The real beauty though is the extra sensitivity you get using braid. You can feel every bump and knock and very quickly you will learn to distinguish between touching the bottom or hitting weed and a lunge from a fish. Braid has no give in it at all and so when a fish takes it you get a real bang! I can now distinguish between certain types of fish by the way they take the lure.

A few tips on using braid. Firstly, use the right breaking strain. 50 lbs test is pretty good for what I do, which involves catching fish up to 15 lbs or so. Because of the lack of stretch you need to use a much higher breaking strain than you would with monofilament, so don't be intimidated by the breaking strain being so high. Always make sure you have you have the clutch set on your reel too. That is where the shock absorbency of your setup will have to come from and if there isn't any give anywhere you'll get snapped very easily. Also, when retrieving, point the tip of your rod at your lure at all times to keep the line straight. That means that if a fish does take your lure there is no slack for it to use to drop the lure. Instead the fish will encounter resistance immediately; that will help set the hook and you will be straight into fighting it.

Take it from me, you'll love braid.

Tackle Storage

Tips On Organizing Your Bass Fishing Tackle

The difference between a successful angler and an unsuccessful one usually comes down to something as simple as managing their bass fishing tackle.

Well organized tackle could mean the difference between "snagging" a bass lurking in your vicinity or the fish simply losing interest in what you have to o 00004000 ffer simply because you've spent the last half hour looking for a hook, weight to just unraveling line. You know the feeling, by the time you've got a line back in the water the moment has passed!

Organizing Your Bass Fishing Tackle

As a child, I often used to watch in wonderment at my old man before every fishing excursion; he was so organized that there wasn't an item in his tackle box which he wasn't aware of. He always spent time before we left organizing everything neatly into an arrangement so when he needed it, he didn't have to waste valuable time looking for it.

To be honest, it drove me mad at the time because it seemed like a chore but years later, I've now realized how important managing this area really is.

Organize Your Fishing Day

One of the biggest mistakes anglers can make is to over prepare for a day on the water. What do we mean by this? Simply taking along equipment which doesn't fit in with the day's requirements.

If you are just going out on the water for a few hours or a even a day, it's not likely you are going to need every piece of equipment you own. Taking what you need means cutting down on unnecessary bulk and weight and means you can move around a little more freely. It also means when you need a piece of tackle in a hurry then you'll get to it reasonably quickly.

If you are traveling away for a few days then yes, you'll need to cover most angles which means a different variety of bass fishing tackle is required. A good tip for long fishing excursions is to take a mainstay tackle box containing most of your gear plus a smaller storage system, something like a wallet or smaller soft binder. Put what you need in the smaller container and just re-stock it when you need to.

Organizing bass fishing tackle just makes sense. Two questions you can ask yourself when placing it in a storage area are: is everything going to be easily accessible and will I be able to locate what I need in a hurry? If it's well separated from each other as to avoid frustrating entanglement, then there is no reason you should have those nightmarish moments when everything is mashed up like a spaghetti dish.

The Importance Of Storage

While the storage system is vital in good bass fishing tackle management, just as important are the various tackle organizers available on the market. Hooks in hook organizers, weights in weight organizers, baits in bait organizers...you get the picture. Organizers are ideal in larger storage systems such as the bulkier tackle boxes or simply keeping them in an area of the house such as a garage away from the children.

From traditional tackle boxes to the new soft binder storage units, managing tour tackle shouldn't be a chore; it should be a pleasure particularly if you are serious about your bass fishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find the fishing tackle storage I'm looking for?
Okay I have a lot of tackle. I'm a LOT. I can't seem to find anything big enough. Especially for soft plastics. I have them STUFFED in a carry bag that is very difficult to zip and sort through. It literally weighs about 20lbs. Okay so I know I've got a problem with shopping for fishing stuff. I can't help it. I've tried a couple of binders for the plastic stuff but I have to use a few of them and they only came with about 10 pages. They weren't durable or water resistent either. I need something that will hold 30-50 pages. Rediculous I know. And the tackle box I'm currently using I need to upgrade too. I need one big enough to store at least 5-6 storage boxes along with 30-40 spinnerbaits/buzzbaits. I will like room to grow too. Not only that but storage for other smaller things like clippers, line, etc. Any ideas???
Also, I've checked all the main retailers like Bass Pro and Cabela's and they don't have what I need. All too small or not enough storage. My main fishing is bass. I have seperate boxes for saltwater and or catfish/crappie and so on. But I like to have all my stuff together and sorted when bass fishing. If I'm going to a pond then I just take a smaller box or waist pouch. But as of now, especially soft plastics, I have no way of organizing anything.

    • ANSWER:
      Deadboy,

You can get what you need in any variety of materials to your liking. A quality upholstery shop will get you going and with your specifications. Other than this,, take a serious look at your arsenal and start asking yourself, " do I really need this?' Stupid question, hell ya you need it! Go to Custom and make your life easier!~good luck catchin'.

  2. QUESTION:
How can I keep the dividers of a tackle box from popping out w/o affecting the bait / lures? What kind of glue?
I just bought a new fishing tackle storage box and the dividers are really loose and my hooks and such are sliding out into the next compartment under the divider. Is there a way that I can glue these dividers down so not to affect any lures or soft baits?

    • ANSWER:
Try a hot glue gun. It's strong enough for this task, and hardens immediately as soon as it cools down unlike most glues which require time for evaporation. The glue is actually just a type of plastic, and shouldn't affect the contents of the tackle box.

  3. QUESTION:
help how can i tackle two bedrooms that were used for storage that had no heating and clothes are ruined from?
dust and dampness,hi i had 2 rooms as storage there was no heat in them over the winter,i just left them as i had a bunch of stuff i didn't know what to with and avoided sorting them out, however now sorting through stuff the room was filled with dampness and dust, what can i do to make it smell nice and how do you wash clothes that are very damp are they all ruined?
any advice on the best way to deal with sorting out clutter, especially magazines/newspapers thanks
thank you so much dawn and fab

    • ANSWER:
If the clothes do not have mildew (little black speckles on them) and they are washable, they are not ruined. If they have mildew, they are toast---you can kill the mildew, but it leaves spots behind that are almost impossible to eradicate.

If the clothes don't have mildew, wash them normally but add some Boraxo to the wash water. It is an inexpensive and very effective laundry deodorizer.

If the magazines/newspapers have been in a damp room, they will also get mildew...and they will be a source of mildew spores to ruin the rest of your house. Put them in plastic trash bags and take them to recycle.

The first thing you have to do with the room is dry it out. Once that is done, you need to search for signs of mildew and mould and get rid of them. Chlorine bleach kills mildew, as does white vinegar. Only use bleach in areas that you aren't concerned about leaching colour out: don't use it to clean the walls of a carpeted room, for example, as dripping or spilled bleach will damage the carpet.

Take out curtains and draperies and wash/clean them. Empty closets and clean them with vinegar to kill mould and mildew spores. Wash down walls, ceilings, windows, window frames and sills, doors, door hardware, with white vinegar. Remove all mildew from the room, then paint. Make sure you have added a mildew retardant to the paint or the stuff will come back.

This will clean the rooms, remove the source of mildew spores, and eliminate both the mildew and damp smells.

  4. QUESTION:
    uglystik gear and tackle bag?
i just got an shakespeare ugly stik fishing pole, and i am now waiting to get the free gear bag that goes with it. for thoose who already have this bag i was wondering what tackle storage box (such as the plano pro latch ones or somthin...w/e works lol) fits the best in this bag. also weather they fit in the bag standing up or laying flat. thanks alot

    • ANSWER:
Well I got a pair at Xmas and a pair last week. Still waiting for the first bag. It seems to be a nice waiting list. So,
about the gear....Been using the stik for 30 yrs. Love them.

  5. QUESTION:
Get rid of kitchenware and storage boxes' smell...?
I let a friend of my house-sitting for me over 2 months and when I came home, my non-stick cookware and my plastic storage boxes have some very weird and disgusting smell. Even my friend has offered the money for the compensation, I still want to tackle this problem because frankly I have tried a lots of way to clean these smell: from baking soda, bleach, Lysol (the all-purpose deodorize one) and the smells are still there. Help? Anyone?

Unfortunately plastic will absorb odors from food being left to rott and you can't get the smell out. You will just have to bite the bullet and buy new containers. Sorry.
