Beekeeper Starter Kits - A Smart Choice to Start Beekeeping

Starting beekeeping is really easy, assuming you have read a guide or handbook about beekeeping or gather information from other reliable resources. After you gain sufficient understanding about beekeeping, you will be ready to implement all the theories and knowledge and put them into real practices.

Fortunately, today there are plenty of beekeeping starter kits available in the market which you can start with. A typical starter kit consists of parts that are needed to construct your hive and a complete set of beekeeping protective gear plus some additional items that may be needed to make your task easier.

Most of the hive starter kits refer to the design of the standard Langstroth hive, which includes (from top to bottom):

  • A telescoping cover
  • Inner cover
  • One or more supers or hive bodies
  • Queen excluder (optional)
  • 8 - 10 frames of various sizes this include a cell foundation
  • Brood box
  • Bottom board
  • Hive stand

The telescoping is the outer cover is placed on top of the hive. It could be made of wood or polystyrene which fits over the hive and meant to protect the entire hive from weather. Another version of the outer cover is the migratory cover, which is made of a galvanized metal sheet.

The inner cover is a sort of barrier between the top cover and the inside of the hive which prevent the bees to glue the top cover to the upper sides of the supers. It can be made of a plastic sheet (for areas with moderate climates) or a solid cover with a communication hole (for areas with hot summer)

The supers or hive bodies are the structure that holds the frames with a standardized inner dimension. It could be made of wood, polystyrene or other plastic material and are grouped into deep, medium, shallow and comb supers providing you the flexibility to construct a brood chamber aside from storing and harvesting the honey. The supers are available in an assembled or unassembled format.

The frames and foundation are the structure that holds the honey comb and brood comb within the super. It has honey comb impressions where the bees suppose to build wax honey combs on it. The foundation should be placed at the bottom of the hive. You will usually get 8 - 10 frames of various sizes in your starter kit. Like the supers, you can choose among assembled and unassembled frames. You do not need to use all the 10 frames and use only 8 or 9 which depends on your preference.

The queen excluder is an optional part in a beekeeper's kit. This is a divider between the brood box and the supers. It could be made of a perforated metal or plastic sheet or just a framed wire grid. This excluder is meant to prevent the queen to enter and lay eggs in the honey supers. If the queen succeeds in laying eggs in this area, it will be difficult to harvest a clean and quality honey.

The brood box or also called the brood chamber is at the very bottom of the hive and is the place where the queen bee lays her eggs. This is the place where the broods, which is referred to the egg, larvae and pupa stages of a bee lifecycle, will develop to mature bees.

The bottom board forms the floor of the hive. It could be equipped with an entrance reducer (optional). The bottom board is placed above the hive stand which keeps the hive off the ground and provides a landing platform for the worker bees when they want to enter the hive.

Aside from the above common hive starter kit you may also get a clothing starter kit which includes a cotton or polyester coverall jumpsuit, a mesh helmet (hat and veil) and a pair of vented leather gloves. As a matter of fact you can choose from various styles and sizes that should fit your body.

There are also starter kits that include additional items such as a beekeeping smoker and its fuel, hive tools and a bee brush. Look for the bigger smoker since it is easier to light. And last and might be the most important item is to ask for a beekeeper's handbook if it is not included in your kit, as well as an instruction guide on how to assemble all the hive parts if you purchase the unassembled kit.

So, after you have prepared the proper bee housing from your kit, the next step will be purchasing the bees. The bees are your workers that will collect and produce honey for you. Recruiting the bee workers is another important task you should attend to if you are aiming to harvest quality honey.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Help buying first fishing rod/set?
Something tells me this question will infuriate whichever pros frequent this board, and I understand why. However, I'm going to ask anyway.

I've only been fishing once before and I loved it. I've been wanting to buy a rod and supplies for quite awhile now, and I'm trying to figure out what my best options are.

There's plenty to read online about particular rods and stuff, but I think I'm looking for one of those combo kits (less that 30$ that come with a starter tackle box). I know it must sound lame, but I can't afford to drop a ton of money on hobbies right now. I do not have a license. I only intend to use this on free days or at piers.

With these constraints, is there one particular piece of crap combo set (or cheap separate rod and tackle box) that anyone could recommend?
    I appreciate your time. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Ugly Stik. Nuf' said. They are dependable, extremely strong (can bend in half without breaking, look it up on Youtube if you don't believe me), and surprisingly sensitive for the "backbone" that they have. They have combos at Walmart CHEAP. Ugly Stik is the perfect rod for the average fisherman. It is cheap, yet reliable. Check em out, you won't be disappointed.

  2. QUESTION:
Is football the most important right of passage for an American boy?
1969 was a big year for me. It brought the change young boys anticipate most.

No, you little pervs…football pads! Sandlot ragamuffins no more, this was our big chance to try out for Ridgeview Junior High and wear a Jays’ blue and white jersey.

I was a late bloomer. At thirteen, I was neither strong nor fast. I barely survived the practice drills and quickly made my way to the end of the bench. All I wanted to do my first year was make the team and wear a number.

Back then a player’s number was his identity. There were no names on the jerseys. You knew who was playing what position by their number. The rules still apply today. Backs wear low numbers like 16 and ends wear high numbers like 80. Linebackers and tackles have numbers like 44 and 99. Show-offs wear the number 1.

We got our numbers a few days before the first game. The excitement was boiling as we filed into the gym. We went spastic after seeing the two big cardboard boxes of jerseys on the floor.

This was the most stressful line I would ever stand in. I couldn’t watch.

The best players got to go first. All the starters went up one by one and looked through the neatly folded stacks for their dream numbers.

Then the second string took there turn all at once. After the smoke cleared the boxes were empty and the remaining shirts were scattered across the gymnasium floor.

Us “Scrubs” picked last. It was a dog pile. I came up out of the heap with 45, a darn back’s number! One kid trying out for Full Back got 77 so we swapped. We both smiled with the feeling of inclusion. At least we had a number in the right sequence.

They let us wear our jerseys to class the next day. In my first hour a girl actually spoke to me. She said, “I like your uniform.”

I smiled and thought to myself, “I really do love football!”

    • ANSWER:
Sweet Lord, Tyler was 28....special teams DEF. He didn't like football too much, but loved the action. (Take that any way you wish...)

We're talking about the kid, who as a freshman asked PERMISSION from us to go out toilet-papering trees for Homecoming! We said "SURE, but if you get caught, you pay the price."

      HE GOT CAUGHT.= ticket.

  3. QUESTION:
What with Chelsea fans hating on Wilshere?
I know chelsea finally produces a good english player but that does not mean others suck

and excuse me.. Wilshere plays the hole... position behind striker..

wneger has switched him to play box to box... cappello tested him as box to box and guess what

wilshere made the most tackles.. for a starter in the english national team that is really impressive

so drop ur hate crad.. no arsenal fan hates McEahran.. you guys finally get a good english poduct but since wilshere get the attention you start ranting...

on 1st if March he turns 18.. and the way things are going he is going to need games..

by the time wilshere was 18 he started getting them.. so is it wilshere`s fault he get all the attention?

drop it.. makes you guys look desperate seriously desperate

    • ANSWER:
It's the exact same case with Gareth Bale

People are simply jealous. If Wilshere (like Bale) was at their club, he would be brilliant. Because he isn't, people find insulting him works a lot better than just being capable of admitting what great players they are.

      Oh and *Cue the TD's...*

    pound

    • ANSWER:
I would have to give that team sort of a low rating. Here are a few comments:

-It looks like you taught Pikachu Thunderbolt with TM24. However, Pikachu learns Thunderbolt all by itself at L26. Thus, you should have used TM24 on Nidorina or Jigglypuff, so you could have 2 Thunderbolters.

-Thundershock is useless when you have Thunderbolt. Both are 100% accurate electric moves with a 10% chance to paralyze, but Thunderbolt does more than twice as much damage. Thus, it's a waste of a move for Pikachu to have both. Double Team or Thunder Wave would have been good choices, Growl or Tail Whip would be ok. Seismic Toss is an option; it's in TM19 which is on Route 25; if you missed it on your first chance, you must use Cut to get it.

-Water Gun is useless when you have Bubblebeam. Both are 100% accurate water moves, but Bubblebeam does more damage and has a 30% chance to lower speed. You should have just taught one of those moves to Jigglypuff, and the other to Nidorina, so you could have 2 water-move-users.

-Tackle is useless when you have Scratch. Both are normal moves, but Scratch is more accurate and does more damage. I'm sure Nidorina would have appreciated Thunderbolt or Water Gun.

-Cut is generally not a first-choice move. Yes you do need it to beat the game, but there are several normal moves that are much more powerful, and you can't delete Cut. However, it's interesting to note that Venusaur is one of the few pokemon for which Cut is not 100% useless. Unlike Double-Edge and Take-Down, it's not self-damaging. It's more accurate than Hyper Beam and doesn't require any recharge. Unlike Body Slam, it has no chance to paralyze. You might be thinking, "wait, doesn't that mean Body Slam is better?" The answer is no. Sleep is a really devestating status effect, and poison is good to build a team around because almost everything can learn Toxic and when combined with stuff like Wrap or Double Team/Rest it's nearly as devestating as sleep, but paralysis has neither of those benefits and thus just gets in the way of sleep and poison. So, for Venusaur, Cut could potentially be a first-choice move--but it's not too likely.

-I know you haven't had the chance to teach many TMs to Pidgeotto yet, but keep in mind that when it does get the chance to learn some new moves, Gust and Whirlwind should be the first things that you delete. Gust is just like Quick Attack except it doesn't always go first. Whirlwind is only useful in the wild, it's not much better than just running away, because you can always run away when you're faster; when you're slower, you go first if you try to run, but you must first let the opponent attack you before you get to use Whirlwind, and Whirlwind is only 85% accurate anyway. If you still have TM34 (Bide), Pidgeotto would appreciate it. Also maybe consider TM44 (Rest).

*Pokemon Master Chris' "perfect team" has some highly exploitable weaknesses. It has 4 things that are weak to ice, and only 1 that is resistant. It has 2 things weak to psychic, and 0 resistant. It has 2 things weak to rock including 1 double-weak, and only 1 resistant. It has no reliable way to hit a weakness of a fighting-type; Wing Attack with weakness still does less than Double-Edge, whereas Fly and Sky Attack both take 2 turns so your opponent has a chance to switch. Remember: Just because Ash used it in the anime, doesn't mean it's what's best in the video game.

*White Fire Reshiram's information comes from Red/Blue. In yellow, Erika will have Tangela L30, Weepinbell L32, and Gloom L32. Nidorino and Nidorina can most certainly be useful before, as well as after, beating Erika. It's true that water is weak to grass, but that doesn't mean you should avoid using a water type until after you beat the grass gym. Seriously =/

  5. QUESTION:
    Fantasy Football?
Who should be the first overall pick in fantasy football this year. The way I see it there are 3 choices. All 3 of pros and cons. I'd like to know what our reader(s) think. Here are the options:

    1) Ladian Tomlinson - This San Diego running back has been the consensus top choice for years. He typically averages 1300-1400 yards; 18-20 touchdowns and 50 or so receptions for another 400 or so yards. One year, in fact, he had over 100 receptions. He is consistently a stud. This year, however, could be different. 2 running backs outperformed him last year statistically - Shaun Alexander and Larry Johnson. And, now Tomlinson has a new QB in Philip Rivers who has never started an NFL game. This could cause teams to put 8 men in the box and hurt his rushing totals.

    2) Shaun Alexander - Seattle running back who had 28 touchdowns last year - an unbelievable fantasy year. There is no way he can match that year again, but he consistently gets 18-20 touchdowns (like Tomlinson). The downside is this: (1) The Madden Curse - Alexander is on the cover of 2007 Madden football. For 5 of the past 6 years the player on the cover has had a VERY disappointing year. The one year this didn't happen, a defensive player (Ray Lewis) was on the cover; and (2) The Super Bowl Runner-Up curse - for something like 6 straight years the super bowl runner up has had a terrible year the following year. Typically the team faces injuries and a losing record. Both of these curses could come to "haunt" Alexander this year.

    3) Larry Johnson - Kansas City Running Back. In 9 games as a starter last year, Johnson lit it up and had numbers that most RB's don't get in 16 games. If he could repeat those numbers over a whole season, he could have the best fantasy football numbers in history. The downside???? He really hasn't proven himself over the long hall. Plus, KC lost their stud left tackle and don't have a strong replacement for him. Plus, Dick Vermeil is no longer coach and Al Saunders is no longer KC's offensive coordinator. Instead, Herm Edwards is now the head coach. He has to be in the bottom tier of head coaches in the NFL.

What do you all think? If you had the number one pick overall - which of these three would be your choice?

    • ANSWER:
LT is the safest choice. If you look back over his career he is the only one of these three RBs who has put up consistent numbers and is proven. Yes Shaun Alexander set the league record for most touchdowns last year, but that was sparatic. He will not have the same type of season again, in fact it is tough to predict what kind of season he will have at all. I'm not saying he isn't a top 3 running back, I'm saying that the safest/smartest choice would be LT.

Larry Johnson is high risk/high reward in my opinion.
