How To Rig A Slip Bobber For Catfish
What's a slip bobber? A slip bobber is a type of fishing bobber that is allowed to slide freely up and down the line. The bobbers ability slide up and down the line allows anglers to fish in much deeper water than they would with a traditional clip on bobber, and also greatly increases the ease and functionality when casting.
Everyone has fished with one of those old red and white fishing bobbers that clips on the line, well if you're using more than a foot or so of line between the float and your hook those old red and white floats are pretty tough to cast. They also limit your ability to fish in deeper water.
Another advantage of slip bobbers is many provide a much higher degree or sensitivity when fishing, so you have a much greater level of bite detection.
To make a slip bobber rig you will need a slip bobber, a bobber stop, your preferred fishing hook and a small split shot weight.
Slide your fishing line through the plastic tubing from the bobber stop. Once you have done this you will want to remove the bobber stop from the plastic tubing and discard the tubing and pull the lines on the stop tight. Once the knot is tight cut the loose ends and insert the line through the bead that comes with the bobber stop.
Slide your fishing line through the hole in the float and pull it out the other side and attach your preferred hook to the line using a Palomar knot. Go a few inches above the hook and add a small split shot lead weight to the fishing line and you are ready to get started fishing.
You can fish your rig as deep or as shallow as you would like but sliding the stop up and down the line. If you are fishing really deep water then the stop just rolls right up in your reel when you retrieve.
Slip bobber rigs are a fun and easy way to catch fish and if you follow our steps on how to rig a slip bobber you will be fishing like a pro in no time.

Catfish Fishing Line

Fishing the Pond for Catfish
Pond catfishing is excellent. Most anglers don't even think about fishing for cats in ponds, because it means not being able to use a boat and other handy things. But, it's a shame, because you can catch nice 10-pounders in ponds all across the nation. There are a few things you have to think about when angling for catfish in ponds, but once you get them down, you're all set.
Pond Catfishing Tips
Ponds are small, and that means that those cats will hear every move you make. For that reason, you have to be especially quiet when you're pond catfishing. Walk as softly as you can, don't talk too much, and make sure your tacklebox and other things don't bang around too much. Once the cats get wind of you tromping around in their pond, they'll get away quick.
If you can find a good spot to drop your line that's close to the shore, you don't even have to get into the water. This is the best situation. Crouch right on the shore and get your line out as far as you can. This technique sometimes works wonders in ponds.
Same as with a river or lake, put your bait as close to the bottom as possible. In a pond, catfish will be even more likely to stay close to the deeper parts, so you have to get your bait way down there.
Finding catfish in a pond is not so different from finding them anywhere. Look first in the deepest parts of the pond, especially if there is a hole or dip in the ground underwater. They love to hang out way down in the depths, and this is just the same with ponds. If there is a dam or other obstruction, you will often find catfish down under it. At those depths the water is nice and cool, and that's what cats prefer. Around any kind of obstruction like a pile of rocks, a beaver dam, tree stumps, logs or humps you'll find catfish. Keep in mind that wherever it's dark and cool, that's where they are most likely to be.
If you have a creek that feeds water into the pond, that is a good place to look for catfish. Drop your line in the area of the pond right where that creek comes in. This will be a great place for catfish to feed, so they'll be looking there for something to eat.
Some ponds have algae and other vegetation floating around, and this is a good place to find catfish. We call this "cover," and you can almost always find catfish hiding out underneath cover.
A good technique to use when pondfishing for cats is to tightline. This is where you attach a tiny weight to your line, get it way down there, and keep the line extra tight so you can feel those bites.
The best bait to use is anything stinky. Catfish will always go after live bait much quicker than any other, and the more it smells the better. This is because they have a great sense of smell, and they use it to find most of their food. Earthworms, chicken guts, shad and other fish are all great ways to catch pond catfish.
Night time is the best time to find catfish in a pond, but you can find them any time of day, depending on the spot. Each pond is different. If you plan to fish that spot again, you might try angling at different times of day. Conduct a little experiment and see when the local cats like to come out and bite.
Finally, just because you're pond fishing doesn't mean you won't get a big fish. Pond catfish can be pretty big, so there still might be a fight. Never underestimate your enemy!

QUESTION:
Will ultra vis fishing line scare catfish?
im wanting ultra vis yellow fishing line but because of its bright color will it scare catfish?-
ANSWER:
I agree with everyone else- generally No. (However, there are many variables that could cause Cats to be line shy- water clarity, fishing pressure, Etc.)But, if you feel the need, you could easily tie on a low-viz leader. A bulk spool of 17-20lb Berkley Big Game "green-tinted" line is only .
If your like me, you want every trip to be productive. Might be a good idea to bring along some L-viz leader line just in case....??
Hope this advice helps ya?

QUESTION:
What is the best fishing line to buy for catching "flat-head catfish"?
I want to re-do my fishing poles for channel and flat-head catfish. What do you suggest?-
ANSWER:
I would suggest a superline/braid. I personally prefer Power Pro. A lot of things matter to me when it comes to line choice (structure, cover, etc.) I use a heavy mono like Berkley Trilene XT a lot but, for all around catfishing I've found braid to be good. It has practically no stretch, is extremely strong, and can "slice" through grass. I've broken rods and had reel gears wear out on me but, no problems with braid failing me.

QUESTION:
Is fishing with a line off a floating buoy (aka jug fishing) for catfish legal in California?
It involves a highly visible float with a heavy line suspended to catch a catfish. It's meant so you can set it and come back to it later, especially since catfish tend to bite at night.-
ANSWER:
Not legal. Your allowed to fish with rod and reel only and it must be attended. Sorry.

Pond Catfish Bait

Catfishing In Ponds
Catfishes cannot be found in large bodies of water because their fins do not have the physiologic capability to swim all day. That's why you often see catfishes just floating around; only to swim away when they get disturbed. The main varieties of catfishes are the blue catfishes, channel catfishes and flathead c 00004000 atfishes. The blues and the flatheads grow quickly up to ten feet. If you intend to do catfishing in ponds then you will most probably just be catching channels.
Catfishing in ponds requires a different approach compared to catfishing done in mud holes. You would have to use shorter rods when catfishing in ponds. When using shorter rods, it is most advisable to use the modified three way rig. The elimination of the three way swivel shortens the leader line, making your hook and actual rod congenial for catfishing in ponds. The longer your rod, the farther your casting distance will be. Tailor your rod length to the size of the pond.
Speaking of rods, rod material plays an important role in hunting for catfish since it's the tool that handles all the stress from the cats' weight. Best choices would be the rods made from graphite, fiberglass and e-glass. The most popular of which are the rods from granite / fiberglass composite due to its affordable cost. If money is no issue, then the best pick would be e-glass rod. An e-glass rod has the ability to handle the heaviest weight among all of the other choices. Before making that rod purchase always examine the rod and make sure that the length coincides with the size of the body of water where you're going to fish for cats.

QUESTION:
What bait should i use to catch a pond-based catfish.?
I fish at a small parks pond which is about 100 feet radius with small streams. I go there with my friends and we usually catch small bluegill. The other day some guy was catching 3 foot long catfish without even trying. What bait should i use?-
ANSWER:
chicken livers or worms. they love cataba worms
-
-
QUESTION:
what do pond catfish eat or what would be the best bait for catching pond catfish?-
ANSWER:
I think chicken liver works the best but its a little tricky to get it to stay on your hook, night crawlers and fiddle worms work well too. Plus since your fishing in a pond I would recommend fishing late in the evening or after dark, because during the day other smaller fish like bream will just steal your bait, but after dark other fish are less active, while catfish mainly feed at night. Hope that helps you out.

QUESTION:
I want to set up a trotline in my pond. What should I bait it with so I only catch catfish?
I don't want to use worm because I don't want to catch bass or bluegill. I also don't want to have to catch fresh minnows every time I rebait the line. I considered cut up bluegill but I don't know if that will work for just small catfish from a pond. Any advice?-
ANSWER:
chicken livers are perfect.

QUESTION:
what bait should i use for catfish in my pond?
my pond is about an acre, and the deepest part of it is about 20-25 feet. 3 summers ago my brother and I put 8 cat fish in there, 4 channel and 4 flat heads. I have yet to catch one to this day.-
ANSWER:
i don't know about your personal pond but i have luck in three ways most of the time.
1.) small bluegill caught from your own pond because these are the fish that they are used to eating
2.) the infamous chicken liver, cheap and you can get it at Walmart
3.) shad, medium size can get at almost any good bait shop but they are a little more priceyi do alot of catfishin in the backwaters of the Ohio River on the kentucky side and you never know what is going to be a good bait for one night so you might want to set up a few different poles and sit back and wait.
i am not sure what kind of setup you are using but for me deadling has been the best method for catching good cats and its just funner. get you a cinder block to set your pole in, cast the line out and let it sink to the bottom no float just sinkers, take the slack out of the line to the point where the line makes a nice little curve into the lake, finally get a stick about as big as your thumb cut a 45 degree angle in the stick and set the line of your pole in the slit on the stick. reel in the slack until you have about 8 inches until the line is tight this will give you enough time to really get ready when the stick moves to the top PULL HARD.
hang on and have fun

Tips On How To Catch A Monster Catfish Part 2
If catching a monster catfish is something you want to do, here are some tips to help you with that goal. Chasing one of the largest fresh water fish in North America can be very challenging. With both blue catfish and flathead catfish regularly exceeding 40 pounds they can be formidable opponents. The World Record Blue Catfish and the World Record Flathead Catfish both weighed over 120 pounds. The World Record Channel Catfish caught at Lake Moultrie in South Carolina weighed 58 pounds. I personally consider any catfish over 40 pounds World Class Trophy material. If you are going to try to catch these fish, you will need to fish a little differently than you do for 5-10 pound catfish.
These monster catfish are found all over the United States from California, Texas, the Mighty Mississippi and Missouri River systems, the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, the James River to the Santee Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina. Even with the abundance of great fishing grounds, few catfishermen catch monster catfish on a regular basis.
I hope the following tips will help you join the ranks of catfishermen who catch these monster catfish on a more consistent basis.
1. Use A Good Knot.
Knots are often the weakest point of any fishing rig. Learn how to tie the Palomar knot. It is simple and efficient, providing almost 100 percent line strength.
1. Double about 5 inches of line, and pass through the eye.
2. Tie a simple Overhand Knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoid twisting the lines.
3. Pull the end of loop down, passing it completely over the hook.
4. Pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot.
For a video of how to tie this knot go to CatfishingProducts and look at the knots link.
2. Keep Your Bait Fresh
A major part of catfishing involves presentation. Catfish have a very highly developed olfactory system. They can smell and taste better than any other freashwater fish. Catfish have over tens times more sensors than largemouth bass. Even in deep dark murky water, the catfish will find your bait. The fresher your bait, the faster and easier the catfish will find it. Putting on fresh bait often is a no-brainer. If your cut bait is over 15-30 minutes old, change it. If your live bait isn't lively, use him for cut bait. One of my favorites is yellow perch; those little guys are really hardy.
3. Hook Check.
Check your hook often. If you have to pull really hard to come off a snag, check your hook. If you have reeled in a nice fish, check your hook for damage. If it's bent, don't even try to bend it back. A weak hook could cost you your next monster catfish.
4. Keep Your Hook Point Clean.
Often when you are hooking live bait you will have a fish scale stick on the point of your hook. This may seem very insignificant, but that little scale could very easily cost you a fish. Check your point every time to make sure it's scale free.
5. Practice CPR
Practicing CPR means Catch, Photo and Release. This will mean there are more giant cats left out there for you and others to catch, but more importantly to breed and perpetuate the growth of large numbers of future big catfish food and giants catfish. The future of catfishing depends on more catch and release. Just because some states don't limit your catches doesn't mean we should waste our resources.
6. Where To Catch Monster Cats
Large river systems provide the most opportunity for big cats, but large lakes and reservoirs can also be very productive. Another very good place to try is the deep water below dams where fish that swim into the dam come out like cut bait and the big cats are waiting to eat them. Creeks and ponds are not usually big enough to support the growth of giant catfish. There are major World Class Catfishing hot spots with monster catfish everywhere. In the United States from Irvine Lake and San Vincente Reservoir in California, Lake Texoma in Texas, the Mighty Mississippi and Missouri River systems, the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, the James River and the Santee Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina are some of the top big cat producers. Even with all these great fishing opportunities, very few anglers catch monster catfish as often as they would like to.
These are just some of the major catfishing hot spots; there are many others all over the country. So find the one nearest you and go Monster Catfishing.
7. Be Patient.
In all probability you are not going to catch a monster catfish every time you go out fishing. Even the biggest names in catfishing like Jim Moyer, Denny Halgren, Tim Pruitt, Cody Mullinnix and Keith Sutton have off days due to weather, moon phase and even good old fish lockjaw. This is very discouraging and tends to send the average angler packin for home, but if you want to catch the real giants, you will need to have patience and plenty of it. Often I use the ambush technique, anchoring up over a deep hole or river bed through a reservoir and waiting out the big cats. Patience is a must, but when they come you will know it. BOOM! A rod will go down, tip pulled straight down touching the water and as you free the rod from the holder, you will think you entered a tractor pull and forgot your tractor.
Believe me, once you hook one of these monsters it will all be worth it and you will be hooked too. Good Luck!

How To Make Catfish Dough Bait

How To Make Pineapple Winter Carp Boilies And Homemade Baits Based On Addictive Ingredients!
Many of you are asking how to make boilies and want unique new recipes. So here is just one simple and easy to make but nutritionally sophisticated highly attractive bait for autumn winter and even spring and summer! This bait uses the attraction of the major component within pineapple flavour and makes a totally alternative pineapple nutty bait option just as good if not better than most so as it is so different; so read on now!
You only need small amounts of this bait to achieve great results and for autumn, winter or spring and even summer I recommend that just a handful of these really potent baits will produce the goods because it is instant acting bait. This recipe and recipes similar in some ways to this can be constantly adapted to stay ahead of fish caution, but you can keep the bait very simple but still very effective indeed!
The basis of this homemade bait is almonds. Almonds have many properties that mean that fish will want to repeatedly eat more of these baits once they smell them and taste them even from a distance away! This is a secret edge of mine so I do not say this lightly, but I do not just recommend you go out and buy bags of almond powder. I recommend that as you only require small amounts of this bait to achieve really good catches then go for the very best option. The best option is to get hold of the freshest highest quality almonds you can source. These will be crunchy, extremely tasty and sweet and very oily and have a very nice crunch when you chomp on them!
Getting the very best freshest almonds you can get can take trial and error and obviously it is best to get samples from different suppliers initially. Wholesalers really do make baits on a budget very easy to achieve and getting accounts with wholesalers in this economic climate is very easy! For small amounts just getting almonds from supermarkets and health food stores etc are obvious options but do aim to approach wholesalers too OK!
All you are doing is putting an amount of almonds into a food processor and liquidizing them. The pulpy course oily material you achieve is really outstanding as the basis of alternative baits. If you wish you might add other nuts including walnuts, pecan nuts, fresh top quality peanuts, tiger nuts, pistachio nuts, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, linseeds and so on.
I have found that the combination of almonds and sesame seeds plus lesser amounts of tiger nuts, walnuts and pecan nuts really is effective. I personally prefer to keep the main thrust of the bait almonds though because I have found that the alkaloids in these are extremely effective and the fresh natural oil of almonds is something that carp really do get turned onto feeding by.
This kind of bait is very good as an alternative to using peanuts, which some fisheries have banned. If you fish a water where particle baits are banned because maybe one ignorant person has applied uncooked nuts to, then this method of exploiting the extremely attractive nutritional and bioactive benefits and advantages of nuts really works; so try it!
When presented with a mush of liquidized nuts, lots of anglers will be at a loss as to know what to do with it to make it into bait. Well the options are simply staggering! For a start you might add glucose syrup, corn steep liquor, betaine and Talin or Thaumatin to really seriously boost palatability and bait solubility which is so important especially in terms of baits for the colder water months. You can also add natural almond extract and this is something I seriously rate; I do not know of any other angler using this today in their baits, but for me it is something I found really effective even as a kid in the seventies so I say why reinvent the wheel when you can use the wheel in new alterative ways!
You can use all kinds of things to exploit your nut mush. The whole point of bait is to disperse to most efficiently pull fish in an excited state to your hook. For this reason I recommend you use paste baits and unheated baits.
If you want to make a summer to autumn bait for example, then you might add additional tiger nut oil, or maybe salmon oil with crushed chilli flakes a soaked in. For winter adding high PC liquid lecithin from CW Baits is really something I would always do after my experiences using it; it is a proven feeding trigger as well as a high energy nutritional emulsifier of oils that improve digestion and over all performance of your bait! For all you guys and girls out there addicted to copying current fashions, simple add a dose of butyric acid to your bait.
Many of you will be new to making baits so maybe what you might do is simply add some eggs to your nut crush mix and then maybe some alternative flavour, intensive taste enhancer and then add some dry powder base mix from your favourite bait company. Dough made from this mixture can be used for paste or boilies and you can make very course more drier mixtures with added shrimps, bread crumbs, crushed hemp and sweetcorn for example, to make spod mixes, or even add cheap ordinary wheat flour to make more sticky binding method mixes.
You can maximize the digestibility of your baits in very many ways, from the use of natural enzymes and ones used in the food industry for specialized purposes, and also you can include various peptides, juices, dry powder extracts and ingredients that have probiotic and prebiotic effects for example. The better digested your baits are all the better as this will make them far more competitive when fished against expensive readymade baits! QUESTION:
does anyone know how to make some good catfish dough balls for fish bait?-
ANSWER:
Could try regular bread balls.Bread balls with peanut butter.
Bread balls with peanut butter and vanilla.
Bread balls with peanut butter, vanilla, and syrup.
Bread balls with peanut butter, vanilla, syrup, and strawberry.
In any mix, feel free to had tiny bids of shredded hot dogs... Catfish LOVE hot dogs. But it decreases the life off your bait sorta. Few days in the heat and it can smell HORRIBLE! Though this might increase the effectiveness of your bait - it'll decrease the effectiveness of your nose.
To help hold this on the hook, take cotton balls and pull strands of it out... Mix it into your dough ball. Make sure it's very stringy and the cotton isn't clumped with other cotton. The thin strings of hair-like cotton will help hold any dough onto your hook.
Also look into getting spring hooks.

QUESTION:
Best catfish bait and if its a dough bait please give recipe?
I wanna know the best bait and the hook for the bait how should i hook the bait to make ot work best also the weight and pretty much everything for that bait for catching catfish-
ANSWER:
Catfish hunt with smell AND their lateral line(movement).Slowly bleeding live bait fish (hook through it usually does the job).
Any food you have that smells HORRIBLE works. I had OLD hot dogs work, worms always work (size doesn't matter with the worms, cats love them), and shrimp. The shrimp can smell horrible as hell, be dead as a door nail, and they will LOVE it.
Like they all say, cats love the bottom of the water you fish on.
I usually drop the bait to the BOTTOM of the water (if you can without getting snagged on logs) and roll my reel up twice... Takes it a foot or so off the bottom right into the catfish's face.

QUESTION:
how do you use catfish dip bait?
I'm a beginning fisherman and was wondering what all these different baits are for (blood dough, hog brains, etc...). Do I simply just dip whatever I'm using (worm, hotdog, minnow) into that concoction and fish like that? Also, to any catfisherman out there, do you think it's better to even use these products or make your own stink bait.
Thanks in advance
also is it best to go catfishing with or without a bobber? Where I fish there is a lot of vegetation at the bottom of the lake-
ANSWER:
best results, get some raw chicken or any raw meat pieces, maronated it really well in that stank bait.. preferably in the hot sun all day, so it really stinks! try going fishing around dusk or 4'o clock. catfish don't like the sun. if you do go fishing in the day time, try to cast your line in shaded areas, like heavy trees near the water or reeds.

Make Your Own Catfish Bait

Fishing Hard Baits Can Make Your Fishing Trip More Successful
Buy the Award Winning 'Esca Lures' online at http://www.innovativefishingtackle.co.uk/
Fishing hard baits, which resemble local bait fish, can be easily done because you can get a variety of them that are capable of diving, floating or suspending at various levels, where the fish might be feeding. Many of the artificial lure manufacturers have developed innovative designs, colors and features to make hard baits more effective than ever before because they are so life-like, in appearance and movement. Not only does this mean there is no need to find a local bait shop, but it also means you can carry a variety of these artificial lures with you and accumulate them over a period of time.
Fishing hard baits takes a variety of techniques because they can be trolled, casted and retrieved slowly, "jerked," "cranked" or rigged in tandem with live baits, for finicky fish. While there are soft baits that resemble worms, lizards or snakes and crawdads or squid, most hard baits will resemble baitfish that are native to many waters, such as minnows, shad and perch. There are some artificial lures that will include rattles, lips for deeper-diving or popping surface noises and you can find jointed hard baits for more movement and life-like action.
While some fishermen might not start out fishing hard baits because they don't think the fish will be fooled by them, you just have to take a look at some of the paint jobs on today's most popular artificial lures, especially those that are used for bass fishing. If you tie one of these on your spin casting or bait casting reel, you are likely to catch some fish, if you choose those that will reach the area they are suspended in and find those that resemble some of the local food sources for the fish you are after.
There are a variety of body shapes and sizes to choose from and you will find them referred to by a variety of names. Whether you are fishing with a hard-bodied crankbait, plug, wobbler, jerkbait, stickbait, floater, suspending or jointed-minnow, you will be most successful if you start out with the most realistic colors and sizes, when imitating local baitfish. The vivid colors are helpful during times when fresh water clarity isn't the best or for deeper diving lures, but you will find many saltwater lures in much brighter colors. The type of fishing can dictate the most effective selection, but one thing is certain-fishing hard baits can make your next fishing trip more successful.
The ULTIMATE Bait Guide
After location bait and it's correct presentation is the most important factor governing success or failure. No matter how expensive your tackle is, if the fish won't bite you go home empty. Freshwater fish can go several months without eating, most marine fish can not, indeed many marine fish will die if not fed several times a day( a big problem for aquarists rather than anglers). Fish will eat a wide range of prey as cutting open the stomach will show but these are not always the best baits to use. Remember your bait is not the only piece of food in the water, the secret of angling is to make the fish ignore everything else and take your bait instead.
Fish are not stupid, they want as much food as possible for as little effort as possible. This is known as optimal foraging theory, and although a contraversial subject amongst ethologists it's well worth remembering. Imagine a bass spotting a sandeel some distance away, first he calculates the energy he'll use to catch it then balances it against the energy gained by eating it, only if the pay off is greater than the effort will he bother. No fish is going to swim very far off course to pick up a puny little worm on your hook, imagine driving to the out of town supermarket just for one can of beans. This is the first rule DO NOT SKIMP WITH BAIT. Be generous, make it worth the fishes while to stop chasing that shoal and pick up your static large portion.
A fish can be said to show a preference for a food if it seeks out that item despite other food items being more available. This is the second rule STICK WITH THE WELL KNOWN BAITS (Yes we've all heard stories of some guy sticking a cream bun on a hook for a laugh and landing 30 lb cod). If one bait does not work try another as different species prefer different food and the colour of the water can play a big part. If you have an idea for a new bait try it out when the fishings good, if everybody else is catching bag fulls and your frozen fishfingers are too then your on to something.
Rule number three is MATCH THE SIZE OF YOUR BAIT TO THE SIZE OF THE FISH YOU EXPECT TO CATCH. Cod have large mouths and appetites to match, flatties have little mouths and cannot fit a size 6/0 hook laden with a mussel and lug cocktail in their gobs. Match the size of the hook with the size of the bait, a small hook buried deep inside a bait is well protected and the fish will not be impaled. If you are fishing for the smaller species it is better to use a 2-4 hook paternoster and spread the bait out rather than lump it on one hook. A pennel rig is two hooks in the same bait and increases the chance of contact when large baits are used.
The final rule is PRESENT IT PROPERLY . A lugworm suspended 3 ft above the seabed will set alarm bells ringing that somethings not quite right.
Worm Baits
Worm baits fall into two groups Ragworms and lugworms. All are treat in much the same way, stick the hook in the tail end and thread up the line till you reach the desired size. A pennel rig should be used when fishing multiple worms.
RAGWORMS
Lots of species available all make good bait. The big one is the king rag Nereis virens reaching 40 cm in length. Paddle, rock and cat worms are similar in appearance and should not be ignored. Many species have jaws (nippers), these can give a very mild nip. Can be dug up or found under rocks. Cultured ragworm is readily available all year round from most bait suppliers. Do not freeze ragworms.
LUGWORMS
Two species are used as bait The common lugworm Arenicola marina which lives in sheltered sandy beaches in a U shaped burrow with a cast and hole at each end. And Black lug Arenicola defodiens (also called runnydown) is much larger and does not form a hole next to the cast. There can be a lot of local names for lugworms runnydown, yellowtails, blowlug etc. To dig up the common lugworm dig a trench and work along it filling it in as you go. This produces the greatest number of worms for the least effort and prevents the beach looking like the surface of the moon. Much is said baout the environmental impact of bait digging by anti-angling idiots. However it must be remembered that a single rough sea can strip an entire beach of lugworms and all its sub-sand organisms which I think puts my dozen worms in perspective. Do not dig around boat moorings for obvious reasons. A while back someone got into bother for bait digging in Duridge Bay (around the time vast quantities of sand were being removed for commercial purposes). Black lug have to be dug out individually, always handle with wet hands to prevent them busting.
Black lug can be frozen easily.
Pop them and squeeze the guts out.
Lie them straight on a couple of layers of newspaper.
Cover with a generous layer of salt for about 3 hours
Shake off the salt and repeat steps 2 and 3.

1.Pull your droopy pants up. You look like an idiot.
2.Let’s get this straight; it’s called a "gravel road." I drive a pickup truck because I need to. No matter how slow you drive, you’re going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way.
3.They are pigs, cattle & oil wells. That’s what they smell like to you. They smell like money to us. Get over it. Don’t like it? I-20 and I-10 go east and west, I-35 goes north and south. Pick one.
4.So you have a ,000 dollar car. We’re impressed. We have quarter-million dollar cotton strippers that we drive 3 weeks a year.
5.So every person in every pickup waves. It’s called being friendly.
Try to understand the concept.
6.If that cell phone rings while a bunch of doves are coming in, we
WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don’t have it up to

7.Yeah, we eat catfish & crawdads. You really want sushi & caviar? It’s

8.The "Opener" refers to the first day of deer season. It’s a religious

9.We open doors for women. That is applied to everyone, regardless of

12.When we fill out a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables, and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and Pace
Picante Sauce.
13.You bring "coke" into my house, it better be brown, wet, and served

14.High School Football is as important here as the Lakers and the
Knicks, and a dang site more fun to watch, but don’t mess with our Spurs!
15.Yeah, we have golf courses. Don’t hit the water hazards --- it spooks the fish.
16.Colleges? Try Texas A&M. They come outta there with an education
plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at passing pickups

Catfish Bait Rigs

How To Rig A Slip Bobber For Catfish
What's a slip bobber? A slip bobber is a type of fishing bobber that is allowed to slide freely up and down the line. The bobbers ability slide up and down the line allows anglers to fish in much deeper water than they would with a traditional clip on bobb 00004000 er, and also greatly increases the ease and functionality when casting.

QUESTION:
What baits, rigs, and techniques are effective on channel catfish?
I consider myself as a experienced fisherman, but I have trouble catching channel catfish at this particular pond in Southern Colorado. I know there is channel cat , because I see them patrolling the area and I have caught some, but want to catch more.
I have used the liver, doughbait, worms, cut bait, live fish, tadpoles, crayfish, and grasshoppers. The rigs I use are the ganglion and attaching a light weight 18' above the hook. I fish anytime of the day besides late morning to mid afternoon. Any suggestions?-
ANSWER:
ahem...you talking to a pro here...yeah...ahahaha. get a size 2 octopus hook. i usually put 3 mealworms at a time and add a lil extra onto there. like 3 mealworms + half a shrimp or 4 mealworms + 1 nightcrawler or 2 mealworms + some stinky stuff. there's a lot of combinations you can do. always worked out for me.

QUESTION:
What bait and rigs should I use for catfishing during autumn?
Tommorrow will be 81 degrees and it has been cooler for the nights during this week (29-44 F) . So I do not think the water is not that warm. I am a college student and work at the same time so I dont make it out too much for fishing. I live in Southern Colorado at 4200 ft and I plant to fish for channel catfish tommorrow from 6pm-10pm. Maybe more if I catch a lot, so what are useful tips and what baits/rigs should I use.Thanks-
ANSWER:
I'm in TN, but regardless of where you are, the best bait for channel cats is basically anything that stinks with blood or dead fish. Around here, shad (a garbage fish with no sport/eating qualities) is what nearly everyone uses. It's easy to find, most bait shops have it, or people catch their own. If it's legal in CO, catch some bluegills or sunfish, gut them, and use their entrails. People also use chicken liver, turkey liver, shrimp, and the old reliable night crawler. Not a thing wrong with using a night crawler, but EVERY fish will go after a night crawler, so they're easily stolen by smaller fish. Plus, if somebody is 100 yards downstream from you, fishing with cut shad, the bigger fish are gonna swim right past your night crawler looking for that shad. If you wanna flirt with 20+ pounders (common in TN on cut shad) use shad. But night crawlers and livers will bring in a lot of 1-5 pounders. I don't know if CO has the larger Blue Cats (routinely 50-75 pounds here) or not, but if they do, those big fellas usually only eat live bait fish (shad, bluegill, sunfish, goldfish, etc.)Around here, a common rig for cattin' (and my personal fave) is a medium-heavy rod/reel combo, with 30 pound braided line. Of course, if you don't fish that much, you probably don't have that specific equipment. As much as most "serious" fishermen hate to admit it, the Ugly Stik combo that most Walmart stores have is perfect for the weekend catter. Truth is, you can catch trophy cats on any rod/reel combo if you take your time reeling them in. If the rod starts bending severely, loosen the drag on the reel and let the fish run with it a little bit. When you feel him stop fighting, start reeling again. Just don't let out all your line while you are waiting for him to stop fighting. Keep your rig simple starting out. Use a 2/0 size hook and a regular split shot sinker. Keep you bait in the lower quarter or third of the water (if the water is 10 feet deep, keep your bait below 2 and a half or 3 feet). So if you were fishing 10 feet of water, pinch your sinker on your line about 2 feet or so above your hook. This lets your bait float in the water, but keeps it up off the bottom so cats can smell it easier and find it easier.
Most importantly, HAVE FUN! I just got back into fishing a couple of years ago after a 20+ year absence, and I love it. Getting back into fishing has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'll be out Saturday night trying to catch some cats myself. Let me know how you do. Good luck!

QUESTION:
BEST CATFISH BAITS AND RIGS?
What are some good catfish baits and how to rig themI will be lake fishing for blue and channel catfish
-
ANSWER:
Here are 5 good baits my dad uses
Arguably, no bait is more closely associated with catfishing than a chicken liver. The reason is simple: livers produce catfish and lots of them. With their strong, meaty smell, chicken livers draw cats from broad areas. Once the cats find the bait, they have trouble resisting them.DIP BAITS
Some folks make their own dips from well-guarded secret recipes that have been passed from generation to generation. Others have favored commercially manufactured blends that they buy by the case. Whether home brewed or store bought, dip baits are gooey concoctions that usually smell horrible, but catfish absolutely cannot resist them. While all dip baits smell bad, a foul odor is not enough to make a tub of bait attractive to cats. A dip must have a cheese base or some kind of protein content. Dough balls, no matter how sour or smelly they are, do not offer much appeal to most cats.
A bait's consistency also is critical. A good dip is soft enough that it breaks up gradually, but solid enough that it does not wash away quickly. In current, where dip baits are really at their best, that can be a delicate balance.
Stringing a worm on a hook is the essence of fishing simplicity. In fact, it almost seems too simple. That said, night crawlers remain some of the finest baits available for coaxing catfish into biting. They smell natural, because they are natural, and they seem to taste mighty good to catfish.
Generally speaking, the rule for night crawlers and catfish is, the bigger the better. Even small cats like big, juicy worms. It is generally a good idea to wad two or three on a hook if you only can find small or medium-sized worms. Unlike other species, catfish typically do not care how night crawlers are strung on the hook. They feed mostly by smell and taste, not by sight, so the more worm that is wrapped around and sewn onto the hook, the better your chances are of hooking cats that bite.
Crawfish rank among the best baits of all for fishing in creeks and small rivers. You can either bounce live crawdads near the bottom in the current using split shot rigs or add a little heavier weight and fish crawfish tails right on the bottom. Dead crawfish produce mostly channel catfish. Live ones -- especially big craws -- also attract modest-sized flatheads. Anglers who specifically want flatheads should put baits close to the thickest cover they can find and be ready to pull with everything they have upon setting the hook.Crawfish are not purely stream baits, though. They are important forage in many ponds, lakes and reservoirs and, therefore, make great catfish bait in waterways of all sizes. Fresh crawfish, whether dead or alive, work great for putting cats in the boat whether they are placed atop rocky points or humps on summer nights, or fished in the deeper open water along the edge of a grass bed.
A live crawfish can be hooked through the base of the tail from the bottom up. Some anglers like to remove the pincers, but the cats probably do not care either way. Anglers using dead craws often pinch off the head and string the body on the hook, inserting it under the tail and impaling as much of the crawfish as possible. This kind of rig can spin in the water if there is any current, so adding a swivel between the weight and the hook is a good idea.
RIGS
PATERNOSTER RIG - Use in river with current or lake. Use for live bait. Similar to the float rig described above. I use a bullet shaped float and a bell sinker on a sliding dropper to keep the bait at the right depth and allow the cat to run a short way before setting the hook. The movement of a float keeps the bait lively.
THREE-WAY RIG - Tie a heavy-duty three-way swivel to end of your braided line. To one ring tie a 24" leader and 6/0 to 8/0 hook. To the other tie a 12" lighter weight leader with a sinker. Use suitable size bell sinker in lakes and slower rivers or a pyramid sinker in faster current. The lighter leader on sinker is so you won't loose the fish in case of a hang up on the bottom. Use for dough, stink, cheese bait, and cut bait or live bait.
BAIT WALKER OR BOTTOM BOUNCE RIG - Use in river with current and rough bottom. Especially good when you are drift fishing from a boat. The bait walker is an L-shaped wire with a weight that allows you to "walk" your bait along the bottom without hanging up. Tie your braided line to the ring at the elbow of the L and a 24" leader with 8/0 or 9/0 hook. Used when fishing live or cut bait.
FLOAT RIG - Use in river with current or lake. Use to drift live or cut bait past likely looking snags and undercuts. I use a bullet shaped float and a split shot dropper to keep the bait at the right depth.
SLIP SINKER RIG - Use in rivers or lakes. Good for cheese, dough, or stink baits. Thread suitable size egg sinke

ANSWER:
I've been catfishing all my life and this is how I do it. First get you some chicken liver, olive oil, and some garlic salt. Put 2 tbls of olive oil, 1 tbls of garlic salt and let marrinate over night. Use a 1 oz weight and put it at the bottom of the line. Put your hook 6 to 12 inches above your weight ( I use 2 hooks, the other hook about 8 inches above the first hook ). Throw out your line, hook on a bell, and let it sit untill the big one comes along. Quick Tip: If you do use chicken liver, take some sewing thread with you to wrap around the chicken liver, this helps the bait stay on your hook. GOOD LUCK !!!!

If your just getting started catfishing (catfish fishing) you might be confused with what you need to do to get started catching them on a regular basis in good numbers, or what you need to do to catch that big catfish. Here are some simple steps to help you learn to catch catfish.
Pick Your Target Species
While must people just refer to them as catfish there are three primary species of cats that are targeted by anglers across the country, blue, channel and flathead catfish. Each different species prefers a unique habitat, has different feeding habits and prefers a different primary food source.
What does that mean to you? To be truly effective and really learn to catch catfish you need to pick the species of fish you want to target and use the right baits, rigs and techniques that will be most effective for catching that species. If your wanting to catch a big flathead but are fishing with "stink bait" then you're not going to have any success.

QUESTION:
ohio river catfish bait?
Im going down to Tennessee but on my way down i want to stop at the ohio river and go fishing for catfish i want to catch a large catfish( thats the whole reason im stopping) i was thinking of using a crapie cut up and other suggestions. thank you-
ANSWER:
Chicken liver works but don't use it. Do you see chicken livers floating down the river everyday in your area. Probably not but if so than go for it. Catfish will be most attracted to what they usually eat. I go all the time and I've found that I have the best luck by taking two fishing rods and catching little bream and crap like that with the little rod. After a catch one I slice the little guy up like a horror movie and hook it on my catfish rod. Also it doesn't matter what you use if you don't go at the right times of the day. Most say that catfish feed the heaviest right at dusk and about an hour or so afterwards into the night. If you don't want to catch your bait or buy fresh living bait then yea chicken liver is probably your best option. It works decently.
